Buchs combines trails by Lake Werdenberg with wildlife watching, culture and a range of leisure activities. When planning your day, the main differences to consider are trail type, season and whether advance arrangements are needed: the sensory trail is a circular route, flight shows take place during a set period, and guided park visits require prior arrangements.

Trails by the Water and Across the Rhine Plain

Lake Werdenberg, also known as “the Seeli,” lies entirely within Buchs. The sensory trail by the lake is a 1.5 km circular route with eight sensory stations, rest areas and barbecue spots. As facilities may be maintained seasonally, check their current condition shortly before your visit.

The Volg Sensory Trail starts and ends at Lake Werdenberg and can be reached by bus from Buchs SG railway station. Bus services may change, so check the current timetable before travelling.

The marked hiking trail network in the municipality of Buchs runs through fields on the Rhine Plain, alder forests between old Rhine dikes and a large nature reserve. One hiking route goes from Buchs via Rhynerhus and the lower Tobelbrugg to Altendorf Mill. Trail conditions can also change seasonally.

Watch Wildlife and See Birds of Prey

The Afrika nature reserve includes meadows, bodies of water and woodland. You can spot kingfishers, various duck species, grey herons and dragonflies there. So if you are interested in wildlife watching, possible sightings include both several bird species and dragonflies.

At the Buchs Bird of Prey Park, you can watch flight shows from 1 April to 31 October and observe the birds’ natural hunting behaviour. Expert-led guided tours of the park are available by prior request and appointment; the animals and their habitats are introduced during the tour. Flight shows run during a set season, while guided tours must be arranged in advance.

The park can be reached on bus 400 to the Ackerweg stop; from there, it is about 800 metres on foot. Check the latest transport information for your journey.

Leisure Activities Throughout the Seasons

The leisure centre in Buchs offers Pit-Pat, illuminated table tennis tables, a trampoline, electric children’s cars, a racing track, simulators, a playground and a snack bar. A range of leisure activities is available in one place, from table games and simulators to a playground and snack bar.

Flös indoor swimming pool is open year-round and has a swimming pool and a non-swimmer pool. The Skilift Buchserberg Malbun ski area has a button lift and can be reached by scheduled bus. These two options differ clearly when planning your visit: the indoor pool is open year-round, while the ski area offers a dedicated winter sports focus, with a lift and bus access.
