Subingen: Forests, Paths and History
Accommodation in Subingen
Subingen is a municipality in the Wasseramt District of the Canton of Solothurn. The village stretches between forests and meadows along the Ösch, on the eastern edge of the Emme’s broad alluvial plain. Located about six kilometres as the crow flies east of Solothurn, the village combines a landscape shaped by plain, stream and gently rolling terrain with cultural and historical sites. For visitors, this makes forest paths, traces of the Ice Age and the history of individual buildings tangible themes.
Forest Paths and Outdoor Activities
The Subingen Forest is used for recreation, including walking, jogging, Nordic walking, cycling and horse riding. The forest hiking trail network in Wasseramt is 44 km long in total and runs from Deitingen via Subingen to Steinhof. This distance refers to the network as a whole; it is not the length of a single walk in the village. One section of the Urzeitenweg leads from Lake Inkwil towards Subingen along forest paths, passing Bolkenweg and Weiherweg before reaching the edge of the forest near Subingen. If you are planning to follow a particular section, bear in mind the difference between the 44 km total network and the described route from Lake Inkwil.
Landscape and Traces of the Ice Age
The municipality of Subingen includes a gravel plain rich in groundwater in central Wasseramt, the broad plain of the Unterfeld, the Ă–sch stream and a gently undulating landscape of ground moraine formed by the Rhone Glacier during the Ice Age. At 473 m above sea level, Buechhubel is the highest point in Subingen. From the flat Unterfeld to the gently rolling terrain, the municipality features a variety of landscapes; the Ă–sch stream is also part of this landscape.
The Fluhstein is an erratic boulder left behind as the Rhone Glacier retreated. As a themed stop on the forest hike, it makes the geological history tangible at a specific site. The Subingen Forest is also home to an Ice Age cemetery with 20 burial mounds. These are distinct features: the boulder’s origin points to the glacier’s retreat, while the burial mounds are the defining feature of the cemetery. The Pfaffenweiher area is a nature reserve of cantonal importance. Strict restrictions on use are intended to promote its flora and fauna.
Cultural and Historical Sites
A sign on the theme of “Cult and Religion” from the Urzeitenweg is located at the entrance to the primary school at Schulhausstrasse 4 in Subingen. The Baroque mansion in Subingen was restored under the supervision of the heritage conservation authorities; valuable 17th-century wall and ceiling paintings were discovered during the work. Along with the theme of the trail sign, the mansion offers another cultural and historical point of interest in the village.
