Erschwil is part of the Schwarzbubenland tourism region and combines the Jura landscape with historic buildings and hiking trails. The village lies in a widening of the LĂĽssel valley. The river flows through the flat valley floor of the basin from south to north. The municipal area also includes Jura ridges and high plateaus; at Hochstelleli, it reaches its highest point at 907 metres. The valley floor and the heights thus stand side by side as distinct aspects of Erschwil's landscape.

Hikes and trails around Erschwil

Erschwil is a starting or ending point for hikes. One of them is called “To Welschgätterli in the Solothurn Schwarzbubenland”. It is 11.1 kilometres long, takes about 3 hours and 40 minutes, and is of moderate difficulty. The recommended period for this hike is May to October. For long stretches, it follows the folds of the Jura along the heights, offering wide views over mountains and valleys before descending to Erschwil. The combination of a high-level trail and descent captures the character of this hike, as does its approximate duration.

A trail guide from 2022 describes the hike from Erschwil to Grindel. It starts at the “Erschwil, Dorf” bus stop and takes about 90 minutes. The route passes through the “Welschgätterli / Gringel” protected area in the municipality of Erschwil. Two other hikes along the municipal boundary take about 4.5 and 3.5 hours respectively, excluding breaks; where possible, they follow the boundary. These time estimates indicate different time requirements without assigning a specific route to either hike.

The Schwarzbubenland Route also follows the LĂĽssel to Erschwil. Check trail conditions before setting out on this route. There is also a network of routes for cycling and mountain biking, available via SchweizMobil. Hiking, cycling and mountain biking therefore offer different ways to add activity to your stay.

Bridge, chapel and historic buildings

The arched natural stone KreuzbrĂĽcke connects the two parts of Erschwil on either side of the LĂĽssel. Built around 1850, it forms part of the nationally significant historic transport route over the Passwang. The bridge is protected by the federal government. It brings together a direct link between the two parts of the village and the history of the route over the Passwang.

St. Joseph's Chapel stands in the LĂĽssel gorge above Erschwil, beside the old Passwang road. It was built in 1671. The existing Stations of the Cross leading to the chapel were added in 1980 and comprise 15 stations designed by Johann Jakob Zemp. A devotional service is usually held at the chapel on St. Joseph's Day, 19 March. If you would like to plan your stay around this date, check in advance whether the event is taking place.

Another piece of historic evidence is a Roman stone building in Erschwil. Measuring 17 Ă— 24.5 metres, it is considered the oldest known building in the village to date. It included workshops, a central hearth and a small smithy; traces of wooden structures were also found. The different parts of the building give this Roman structure a specific place in the village's history, without equating it with the much later buildings in the village.

The Church of St. Peter and Paul dates back to the early 13th century. It was rebuilt in the Neoclassical style in 1847. The church houses the restored Brosy organ, dating from 1788; concerts on the Johann-Jacob-Brosy organ are held regularly. Both the building's history and its musical use contribute to Erschwil's cultural character.

Music and local traditions

Local clubs also shape the cultural life of the village. The Brass Band Erschwil traces its origins to the Erschwil music society, founded in 1898. Since 2009, the band has staged elaborate show concerts; a concert is held in the church each year between Christmas and New Year. The Erschwil-Beinwil yodelling club has performed at its annual yodelling evening since 1992. If attending a concert or yodelling evening matters to your stay, check event dates in advance.

Another place for quiet reflection is the grotto. From the “Erschwil, Dorf” bus stop, the access route follows Schmelzistrasse, Nonnenbrühlstrasse and Ilbachstrasse. Check local trail conditions in case they have changed.
