The district of Gösgen lies at the southern foot of the Jura Mountains, between Olten and Aarau. It is the easternmost district of the canton of Solothurn and borders the canton of Aargau; its main town is Niedergösgen. The area’s different places offer a range of highlights to help you plan your trip: historic sites, a village museum, hiking trails and cycling routes. You can tailor your itinerary to your interests, combining cultural attractions, tours and stretches along the banks of the Aare.

Wartenfels Castle and the Frohburg Ruins

Wartenfels Castle is a landmark of Lostorf. The castle has a Baroque garden with classical features. It is open to the public on weekends during the summer months; check the latest access information before your visit.

At the Frohburg Ruins, the surviving records trace the site’s origins back to the first fortifications around 1050. Frohburg is first mentioned in a document in 1237 and was once the ancestral castle of the Counts of Frohburg. It is one of the largest medieval castle ruins in the Jura. The ruins offer views of the Jura and are open year-round. Check local access information before setting out.

History in Niedergösgen and Lostorf

The castle church in Niedergösgen was built in 1903 and 1904 on the site of the ruins of Falkenstein Castle. The former keep has served as the church tower ever since.

The Lostorf Village Museum is housed in a former Taunerhaus in the northern part of the old village centre. The building dates from the late 18th or early 19th century. Spread over three floors, the museum shows how families lived in earlier times. A visit offers insights into everyday life in the past, while the building itself represents an older part of the village centre.

The museum hosts a variety of art, themed and special exhibitions each year, as well as cultural events such as concerts and readings. The programme may change; check what is on during your stay. Private and group tours can be arranged by appointment. A bookable apéritif can be added to a tour. Confirm the tour and the apéritif’s availability with the museum in advance.

A themed trail through Stüsslingen

The Stüsslingen Time Trail is a themed route about 4 kilometres long, with ten stops. It starts at the protected historic cemetery church, passes through the village and ends at the chapel in Rohr. The trail is particularly suited to families, school groups and history enthusiasts. Digital content may change; check the current route before setting out.

Hiking through forests, along the Aare and over the hills

In the Gösgen area, hiking trails pass through extensive forests, follow the meandering Aare and cross prominent elevations such as Froburg Hill and Wasserfluh. In Erlinsbach, signposted routes run through Buerwald, between Erlinsbach, Stüsslingen and Niedergösgen, as well as through Gugen.

The three Erlinsbach hikes take between 1¾ and 2½ hours. This range can help you plan your time; actual walking times vary depending on conditions. The routes lead to scenic spots in Erlinsbach Forest and offer the chance to use the renovated fire pits. Check the condition of the facilities before using them.

Cycling and the banks of the Aare

In Obergösgen, National Cycling Route No. 5, the Mittelland Route, runs along the Aare Canal. There are also numerous picnic areas and fire pits on the banks of the Aare in Obergösgen. Check the condition of each site before using it.

Lostorf lies in the area covered by National Cycling Route No. 5, the Mittelland Route, and No. 8, the Aare Route. If you are planning a ride, check the route alignment in advance; the information about Lostorf refers to the area covered by both routes.

Kienberg: Nature Park and Hiking Route

Kienberg is part of Jurapark Aargau, a regional nature park of national importance. Route 5 of the Kienberg hiking trails connects a viewpoint, two ruins and an old gypsum quarry in a circuit around Kienberg. This former gypsum quarry is a habitat for rare plant and animal species that thrive in warmth and sunshine. These destinations give the route a distinctive connection to the landscape, history and nature.
