Etziken is a municipality in the Wasseramt district of the Canton of Solothurn. It lies at an elevation of about 479 m above sea level and around 9 km east of Solothurn as the crow flies. Forests, hiking trails and the Wasseramt Loop offer visitors different ways to explore the municipality. The focal point is Etziken Water Tower: it is a landmark of the municipality and also the starting point of a named hike to Burgäschisee Lake.

Landscape and Forest in Etziken

The municipality covers part of the gently rolling moraine landscape in the outer Wasseramt region. It was shaped by the Rhône Glacier during the Ice Age. The documented land use also shows different aspects of the municipality: in 1997, 12 percent of the municipal area was built-up, 32 percent was forest and woodland, and 56 percent was agricultural land. These figures refer to 1997 and reflect the distribution at that time. Etziken’s forest is a popular local recreation area and is therefore one of the defining local features for a stay.

Water Tower and Hiking

The water tower stands at 522 m above sea level on one of the highest points in the Wasseramt region and is depicted on Etziken’s coat of arms. Its significance is thus reflected both in the townscape and in the municipal coat of arms. It also offers a practical point of reference for hikers: the hike “To Burgäschisee in the Wasseramt” starts at Etziken Water Tower. This links a specific starting point with a named destination, without specifying a walking time for this hike.

For a longer hiking tour, the approximately 44 km-long forest hike in the Wasseramt region offers a separate planning option. It is too long for a day trip and is divided into four suggested stages. The stages help break the long route into sections; the tour is therefore designed differently from a single trail with a specific starting point. When choosing a hike for your stay, you can thus choose between starting at the water tower and taking the more extensive forest hike in the Wasseramt region.

Cycling the Wasseramt Loop

Etziken is also part of a cycling tour: the water tower is visible from the Wasseramt Loop. The section of the loop to Burgäschi follows SwitzerlandMobility cycling route 802. Burgäschisee Lake is a good place to take a break. If you plan to use specific facilities during your break, check their availability separately. Hiking and cycling have different focal points here: the hike starts at Etziken Water Tower, while the cycling route features the tower as a visible landmark.

Seasonal Events and Forest Topics

The Etziken forest walk provides information about the forest and its use. It takes place every two years on the first Saturday in July at 1:00 p.m. This is a recurring event with a set schedule and a specific time. In December, there is also a Christmas tree sale in the forest, where you can choose and have a personal Christmas tree felled. The two offerings suit different travel times and interests: the forest walk focuses on knowledge about the forest and its use, while the December sale is about choosing a Christmas tree.

When planning your trip, it is worth deciding early on what you want to focus on: a hike starting at the water tower, a longer multi-stage hike, the Wasseramt Loop by bike, or one of the seasonal forest events. This will help you tailor your search for a hotel in Etziken to the stay you are actually planning.
