At the foot of Mount Rigi, historic sites meet trails with views over lakes and mountains in the Küssnacht district. The district lies on Lake Lucerne and Lake Zug and has lakeside promenades. This offers a choice of very different themes for planning your trip: village history, places of remembrance and walks through the landscape.

Places and history in the district

The district includes the localities of Küssnacht, Immensee and Merlischachen, the hamlet of Haltikon and Seebodenalp. Mount Rigi also lies within the district. In Küssnacht, a historic village quarter with timber houses, the lower village and two town halls by the lake shape the townscape. The lakeside promenade is located on the site of a former goods transshipment and storage area; the lakeshore also offers a way to understand the town's trading history.

Sacred buildings include the Baroque parish church of St. Peter and Paul, which has been carefully restored in keeping with its style. Haltikon is home to the Chapel of St. Catherine, dating from 1636. It is a valuable example of early modern rural sacred architecture. Its rich interior furnishings consist mainly of early Baroque and Baroque works, in which transitions between styles can be seen.

Tell, Gessler Castle and places of remembrance

The Hohle Gasse is freely accessible year-round. The present-day Tell Chapel there dates from 1638. In 2004 and 2005, the Hohle Gasse was extensively renovated and an information pavilion was added, presenting the story of William Tell in five languages. Check local conditions before your visit.

Gessler Castle is also freely accessible year-round; access is from Seebodenstrasse. It was first mentioned in a document in 1263 as «in castro nostro Chüssenach». As access conditions may change temporarily, it is worth checking the latest information before your visit.

The Queen Astrid Chapel commemorates Belgian Queen Astrid, who died in a car accident on 29 August 1935. In 1960, the chapel was moved to the lakeshore on the lower side of the road for traffic safety reasons. A public memorial service is held every year on 29 August; confirm this year's arrangements before your trip.

Museum, traditions and special insights

The Küssnacht local history museum presents the development of the three villages through a range of historical themes. These include early settlement, the transition to the Canton of Schwyz and an attempt to form a separate canton. An audiovisual presentation is dedicated to Klausjagen and Sennenchilbi; the latter takes place every six years. Groups can also visit the museum outside official opening hours, including in winter, by arranging a visit in advance by email. Confirm this option beforehand.

Küssnacht's Klausjagen is an annual St. Nicholas tradition that attracts around 20,000 visitors. For a different kind of insight, consider a tour of the OMIDA factory: it shows how homeopathic medicines are made, and the tour passes through the production hall, various departments and the company's own laboratory. Confirm the availability of this tour, which requires advance booking, before your trip.

Hiking trails and lake views

The Küssnacht area has a pre-Alpine network of hiking and mountain-biking trails. The panoramic walk follows official hiking trails from the edge of the village towards St. Martin's Chapel and back to the village. Along the way, there are views of Mount Rigi, other surrounding mountains, Lake Lucerne and Lake Zug. The panorama depends on the weather and visibility. The route passes flowering meadows, hedgerows with small-scale habitats, orchards and traditional tall-stem fruit orchards. Depending on the season, you may spot birds, insects and various plant species there.

The Seebodenalp Glacier Trail offers a different focus: this informative circular trail explains traces of the Ice Age with 15 information panels. Allow about an hour and a half for the complete circuit; the actual duration may vary. The mountainside section is steep in places and requires good footwear. The trails therefore offer different experiences: one focuses on Ice Age traces and the circular route, the other on views and the cultural landscape along the way.

A hike on the Waldstätterweg also starts in Küssnacht am Rigi and offers views of Lake Küssnacht, Mount Rigi and peaks in Central Switzerland. If you are looking for a hotel in Küssnacht, first decide whether village history, hiking trails or both will be the focus of your stay. Check the location of the specific hotel against the places you plan to visit.
