Gersau on Lake Lucerne
Accommodation in Gersau
Gersau lies at the southern foot of Mount Rigi in a bay on Lake Lucerne sheltered from the climate. Culture, regional traditions and nature can be discovered here through specific places and experiences: from the historic town hall and Maria-Hilf Chapel to the adventure trail, with stops covering habitats and geology. This offers a range of options for planning your trip, from local history and recurring events to a circular hike.
Town Hall, Chapel and Gersau Traditions
Gersau’s town hall was built in 1745 and later used, among other things, as a prison and a school. Today, it houses the local museum, among other things. Its changing uses make the building a tangible point of reference for local history: one building brings together several chapters in Gersau’s public life.
Maria-Hilf Chapel is also associated with several local connections. It is in Gersau and is also known locally as the Kindli Chapel. The chapel is used for weddings, and a candlelight concert is held there every year as part of the StradivariFEST. It is therefore both a named cultural site and a venue for recurring events.
The traditional Gersau Sennenchilbi has been held on the Sunday after St. Gall’s Day for as long as anyone can remember. During the Gersau Chlausentrycheln, a procession of Trychler bell ringers and Iffelen lantern bearers winds through the dark streets every evening in a meditative rhythm. Both traditions give local culture its distinctive character, but each has a different focus: the Sennenchilbi is tied to a specific Sunday on the calendar, while the evening procession is at the heart of the Chlausentrycheln.
The StradivariFEST at Numerous Venues
The StradivariFEST Gersau is a tradition and a fixture in the last week of July. Concerts take place by the lake, in the church, in hotel halls, beside and inside chapels, at viewpoints and on boats. The venues thus range from churches and chapels to lakeside locations and boats. If you want to plan your trip around a concert, check the specific festival dates in advance.
Gersau Adventure Trail: Habitats, Geology and Views
The circular hike on the Gersau Adventure Trail starts at the Gersau boat station. The trail features seven stops covering habitats and eight more on the area’s geological features. It is marked with signs bearing the words “On the trail of nature” and runs half on natural paths and half on paved roads. This route brings together nature topics and geology, as well as different types of path surfaces.
You can plan a detour to Kirchenflueloch along the mountain hiking trail on the adventure trail. From there, you can enjoy a view of Gersau, the lake and Mount Pilatus in the background. The detour adds a specific viewpoint to the trail’s themed stops. When planning your route, you can therefore include this view as a point of interest alongside the habitats and geological features.
Silk Factory, Lakeside Spots and a Regional Specialty
The Gersau silk factory can be visited during ongoing production as part of a one-hour guided tour. This offers insight into the production process, not just the building. As tour arrangements may change, it is advisable to coordinate the tour in advance for your planned visit.
The two named beach baths differ in their location and setting: Cholplatz Beach Bath is closer to the village, in the direction of Vitznau, and offers a sweeping view across the lake. Kindli Beach Bath is in a picturesque, unspoiled setting about 1.5 kilometres in the direction of Brunnen. The directions and the landscape around each location can help you tell the two spots apart when planning your trip.
Gersau cheese tart is another regional specialty that is part of the town’s local character. It has a crispy yeast-dough base and is made with real Swiss cheese. You can enjoy it in various restaurants or buy it in a shop. If you would also like to sample regional cuisine during your trip, it is a distinctive taste of Gersau.
