Ramsen: Wetlands, culture and rail bikes
Accommodation in Ramsen
The Ramsen Moos, the Schüppel Oak, local culture and rail bikes offer different ways to shape a stay in Ramsen. You can consider nature and wildlife observation, cultural sites or a ride on rail bikes. The highlights below can help you decide which topics suit you before booking a hotel.
Wetlands and ancient trees
The Ramsen Moos lies on the western flank of the Schienerberg and has been a designated nature reserve since 1946. It is considered the most valuable wetland in the Canton of Schaffhausen. Its wetland habitats include mesotrophic grassland, purple moor-grass meadow and black bog-rush fen. These three named wetland types give the nature theme a specific focus. The Schüppel Oak adds a remarkable tree: it is approximately 650 years old and is considered one of the oldest oaks in Switzerland. A fire pit near the oak invites visitors to linger.
There are also remarkable old trees in the built-up area, including lime trees, apple trees and large walnut trees. A special habitat can be found at the old railway station: the rare blue-winged grasshopper lives in the track ballast. During a bat walk in 2024, ten bat species were spotted in Ramsen. This brings together several nature themes: old trees in the built-up area, a rare grasshopper at the station and bat watching.
Museum, village character and Wiesholz Church
The Ramsen Pine Museum showcases the diversity of pine trees through cones, mushroom models, lichens and tree portraits. It also provides information about the inhabitants of pine forests and the distinctive characteristics of this tree genus. If you would like to visit the museum, check the access arrangements in advance.
A model railway layout can be viewed at Ramsen railway station; check the viewing arrangements in advance. Another cultural stop is Wiesholz Church. It is dedicated to Mary, Help of Christians; its feast day is celebrated on 24 May. Three of the church’s choir windows are by the artist Georg Riemensberger. Ramsen’s well-preserved village character is considered a treasure that connects people with their homeland.
Rail bikes and a hiking route
Five modern rail bikes are available to rent at Ramsen railway station. Each is designed for a maximum of four or five people. The circuit runs from Ramsen via Hemishofen to the Rhine bridge and back; it takes about 90 minutes. Before setting off, check current operations, availability and reservation options.
A hiking route leads from Stein am Rhein through vineyards, past Wolkenstein and along the Höhenweg to Ramsen. Along the way, it offers views of the Untersee, Lake Constance and Stein am Rhein. The route therefore connects a starting point outside Ramsen with the destination and the expressly named landscapes and viewpoints.
Whether you are mainly interested in the nature reserve, ancient trees, the village character or one of the described tours, Ramsen offers several distinct starting points for planning your trip. Choose the focus of your stay according to which of these topics you would like to explore further.
