Beringen lies in the Klettgau, west of Schaffhausen at the foot of the Randen; hills, fields and forests shape the surrounding landscape. You can explore the town during your stay from several perspectives: viticulture along the Wiiweg, local history at the museum and outdoor activities in the countryside. If you are looking for a hotel in Beringen, these specific themes can help you decide what you would like to focus on during your stay.

Viticulture on the Beringen-Löhningen Wiiweg

The Beringen-Löhningen Wiiweg is a 3 km themed trail that takes around 1 hour and 30 minutes. It starts in Beringen at the Beringen, Höhenweg public transport stop, passes through the vineyards and ends at the Trotte in the centre of Löhningen. This is where grapes are made into wine. Along the way, you can learn about viticulture and related topics. The route therefore combines a walk through the vineyards with a first-hand look at how the grapes are processed at the end of the trail.

Local history at the castle and museum

The Beringen Local Museum is housed in the former residential tower of the Hün von Beringen, known as the “castle”. Since 1996, the museum has also used a former tithe barn dating from 1624. Its collections and documents present the cultural history of Beringen and the neighbouring villages of Guntmadingen and Löhningen. Historical objects include items from traditional crafts, agriculture, domestic life, the church, the military and the fire brigade. The different themes offer insights into various aspects of local history.

The architectural history of Beringen Castle is also complex. Archaeological finds show that the site was once home to a substantial lowland castle with a large main building, protected by an impressive moat. The extension was designed to preserve the treasures of the past and explicitly reference them. Beringen Castle is also home to Ursula and Richard Schneider’s collection of “Mechanical Musical Automata”.

Another place to visit is the Randen Tower and its restaurant. Various hiking trails and a public road lead directly there. Depending on the route you choose, the walk to this destination takes around 40 minutes and covers approximately 200 metres of elevation gain. The information about the Wiiweg and the hike to the Randen Tower gives you different points of reference for planning your time: the themed trail is estimated to take around 1 hour and 30 minutes, while the hike to the destination is said to take around 40 minutes, depending on the route.

Gwaagge-Badi and getting there

Gwaagge-Badi is the first swimming facility in the canton to use natural water treatment. It has an access ramp for wheelchair users, and the entire facility has been adapted for wheelchair use. These specific features add to the options for a stay that includes not only local history and trails, but also a swimming facility.
