Wiesenberg: Mountain Trails and Marian Chapel
Accommodation in Wiesenberg
Wiesenberg is located in the political municipality of Dallenwil in the canton of Nidwalden, Switzerland. Its mountain setting shapes the experience, as do the trails towards Stanserhorn, Wirzweli and Ächerli. When choosing a destination, it is worth considering the different options: there is an easy route to Wirzweli that takes about an hour, a mountain hiking route rated as difficult, and separate winter routes. There is also the Maria Wiesenberg pilgrimage chapel and the Lochhütte alpine cheese dairy on the Alpengold-Wirzweli Trail.
Landscape and Location
Wiesenberg stretches along the eastern flank of Stanserhorn at an altitude of between 1,000 and 1,500 metres. Streams cut distinct channels through the high plateau; mountain meadows, forests and gorges define the surrounding landscape. Wiesenberg is connected to the Wiesenberg/Wirzweli tourism area. This mountain landscape is the setting for a variety of tours: the hiking trails mentioned lead to Stanserhorn, Wirzweli and Gummenalp, as well as over Ächerli to Obwalden. Wiesenberg is a starting point for these routes from spring to autumn.
Hiking Routes of Varying Difficulty
The route from Wiesenberg to the holiday village of Wirzweli is considered easy and family-friendly; the hike takes about an hour. It is also suitable for pushchairs. The route can be walked in either direction. Weather and temporary trail conditions can affect its suitability for pushchairs; local trail conditions are also relevant when choosing which direction to walk. So if you are planning this hike, take the conditions on the day of your visit into account.
The Stanserhorn–Blatti–Wiesenberg route has a different rating: it is considered difficult and is graded T3. It can be started in Dallenwil and walked in the opposite direction as far as Stanserhorn. The two options described therefore differ both in difficulty and in the direction of travel offered. If you are planning around a specific route, these details are more useful than a general assessment of the trail network. Conditions in the mountains can change.
Winter Routes
From the cable car mountain station area in Wiesenberg, a marked snowshoe route heads west to the Ächerli Pass road. Another winter route runs from Wiesenberg to Arvigrat and leads via Sulzmattli and the Treichialpen to Seewliegg. The two descriptions name different destinations and intermediate points. When planning, it is therefore important to decide which route you want to take; snow and weather affect winter trail conditions.
Maria Wiesenberg Pilgrimage Chapel
The Marian chapel is located in Wiesenberg. A lively pilgrimage tradition developed there before 1500. The present-day pilgrimage chapel and the adjoining chaplain's house were built in 1754; the chapel was consecrated on 2 September 1768. The early pilgrimage activity, the construction period of the present-day buildings and the later consecration date thus provide different points of reference in time. The edition of the Cultural Property Protection Inventory dated 1 January 2026 lists the Maria Wiesenberg pilgrimage chapel with chaplaincy as a cultural property in Dallenwil.
Getting to Wiesenberg
The Dallenwil–Wiesenberg cable car, which carries four passengers, takes about ten minutes from Dallenwil to Wiesenberg. Its valley station is approximately 100 metres from Dallenwil railway station. The journey time and distance are two practical points of reference when travelling via Dallenwil. Operating conditions can affect a journey; check the timetable for your travel date before setting off.
The Wiesenberg road is narrow and single-lane. Outside the winter months, it is open to public traffic and connects Wiesenberg with Dallenwil and, via Ächerli, with Kerns in the canton of Obwalden. When choosing between the cable car and the road, bear in mind that the road is open to traffic only seasonally. The travel options described therefore differ both in their starting point and in the time of year when the road is open to public traffic.
Alpine Cheese Dairy and Regional Products
Alpine dairy farming and cheese-making are part of Wiesenberg's economic life. The Lochhütte alpine cheese dairy is located on the Alpengold-Wirzweli Trail. Its small shop sells alpine cheese, round Mutschli cheeses and the house creation “edelWeyss Chäs”. The shop is open seasonally; products and opening arrangements may change. If you would like to combine the trail with a visit, it is best to check in advance whether the shop is open.
