Location and getting there
Fleurier lies at an altitude of 741 m in the western Val de Travers, in the southwestern Neuchâtel Jura, where the Areuse emerges from the Saint-Sulpice gorge. Fleurier is 28 km west-southwest of Neuchâtel as the crow flies. transN’s R21 connects Neuchâtel and Buttes via Fleurier. Discover watchmaking history on foot
From 1830 onwards, the manufacture of timepieces specifically for Chinese customers helped Fleurier develop into an important watchmaking centre. The historic «Fleurier au fil du temps» walking tour brings this history to life through fourteen educational panels. It runs through the town centre, starts and ends in Fleurier, and is 3 km long. The route takes about 1 hour 30 minutes; it is considered easy and suitable for families. Free brochures are available at Fleurier railway station in French, German and English. This makes it easy to explore the town’s history on a manageable route, with an approximate duration to help you plan.
Architecture and places of remembrance
The façade of Fleurier’s Temple, dating from 1823 to 1826, showcases Tuscan Renaissance style. The bell tower has an octagonal spire dating from 1900; the Temple is built entirely of white limestone. The birthplace of Charles-Édouard Guillaume also links Fleurier with its watchmaking tradition. The house dates from the mid-17th century, and traces of watchmaking activity remain in the attic. It is home to the Fondation Mémoriale Charles-Édouard Guillaume.
Pension Beauregard is a former 17th-century café and one of the oldest surviving civilian buildings in the Val-de-Travers. The building was acquired to provide space for exhibitions by regional artists. Together, these sites tell different parts of Fleurier’s story: architecture, personal remembrance and the development of a town known for watchmaking.
Cultural activities and local spots
The municipal library welcomes visitors who would like to spend some time there or borrow books. It regularly organises activities and gatherings, as well as themed exhibitions. Dates may vary, so it is worth checking the current programme before your visit. RVT-Historique offers trips in the «Charles-Edouard Guillaume» dining car, adding a rail experience to the town’s history.
The Absintherie Celle Ă Guilloud operates a shop and distillery at Grand Rue 29 in Fleurier. Its production follows traditional, artisanal and natural methods. Another way to savour local flavours is the truffle tasting, which is part of the Trail Vallon Gourmand at the Haute Chocolaterie Jacot boutique in Fleurier. The Absintherie focuses on production, while the tasting is part of the trail. Check before your trip to see whether the tasting is being offered.
The surrounding landscape
The former municipality of Fleurier covered a flat valley floor about 1 km wide in the western Val de Travers. It also included the Vallon du Buttes, the high plateaus near Haut de la Vy, the Montagne de Buttes anticline and the densely forested northern slope of the Chasseron range. The highest point in the former municipal area was there, at an altitude of 1,330 m. The Vallon du Buttes is drained by the Buttes stream.
On a hike through the Gorges de la Poëta-Raisse, the descent to Fleurier passes through a green alpine pasture landscape. The gorge is closed seasonally, so check conditions before setting out. This landscape and the town’s history offer different ways to spend your time in Fleurier.
