There are two main reasons to choose Dombresson as a destination: hikes through varied landscapes and a village history reflected in its buildings and archaeological finds. Fairs with scheduled dates are another attraction. Depending on your plans, you can decide whether to focus on hiking, explore historical sites or plan your visit around an event.

Hiking Trails with Different Characteristics

The Les boviducs hike (Chemin chouette No. 3) passes through bocage landscapes and wooded pastures. Its network of paths is linked to the movement of livestock. The route offers panoramic views between Dombresson and La Vue des Alpes. Here, landscape and the history of the trails go hand in hand: you hike through pastureland and along a network created for moving livestock.

La lisière (Chemin chouette No. 4) follows a different route: the hike leads from Les Hauts-Geneveys station to Dombresson, following the edge of the forest. Villages, farmland and wooded areas lie along the route; its description also includes viewpoints and notable natural features.

The main point to consider when choosing between them is their different routes: Les boviducs connects Dombresson with La Vue des Alpes and passes through bocage landscapes and wooded pastures. La lisière starts at Les Hauts-Geneveys station and ends in Dombresson; its focus is the forest edge between villages, open farmland and woodland. The two routes therefore differ both in the landscapes described and in their endpoints.

Location and Landscape of the Municipality

Dombresson lies at an elevation of 742 m on the northeastern edge of the Val de Ruz basin in the Neuchâtel Jura, about nine kilometres as the crow flies north-northeast of Neuchâtel. This straight-line distance is a geographical reference, not a road distance.

The municipality’s landscape extends beyond the immediate village area. To the south, it includes parts of the Val de Ruz basin used for intensive agriculture, on both sides of the canalised Seyon. To the north, it stretches across several ridges of the Mont d’Amin Jura range. These include the Les Planches ridge, the Le Côty valley and the densely wooded Forêt du Côty ridge. The municipality thus brings together agricultural areas in the south and wooded high ground in the north.

The Temple, Building History and Historical Finds

The rectangular Temple de Dombresson was built between 1696 and 1698 to plans by architect Jonas Favre. In 1705, painter Samuel Muller created a trompe-l’œil decoration there, modelled on the Temple du Bas in Neuchâtel. Trompe-l’œil is a type of painting that creates an illusion of depth. After the fire of 2 August 1994, the Temple was fully restored and fitted with stained-glass windows by Aloïs Perregaux.

Other buildings also tell stories of past uses and families. The manor house at Grand’Rue 22 was a doctor’s residence and the home of the Chambrier family. Grand’Rue 34 is identified as the former home of the Sandoz family. From 1880, the Centre pédagogique de Dombresson served as the Borel orphanage; its architecture illustrates the development of education over 150 years.

Another historical connection reaches back to Roman times: on 24 September 1824, a hoard of several hundred Roman coins was discovered north of the village. A plaque in the Hôtel de Commune in the village centre provides information about the find. The buildings’ history, their former uses and the coin hoard offer different points of reference for understanding Dombresson’s past.

Fairs and Dates

The spring fair takes place on the third Monday in May. Since 2026, the autumn fair has been held on the Friday of the second week of the Neuchâtel school holidays. It brings together traders, craftspeople, producers and visitors from across the region.

If you would like to plan your trip around a fair, check the date of the relevant edition. The autumn fair is more than a single market day on the calendar: it brings together different groups from the trade, craft and production sectors, as well as visitors from the region. The spring fair offers a second, differently timed option for planning your trip.
