Menzberg offers a range of ways to spend your stay: sweeping panoramas, hikes across hills and ridges, and churches and chapels with a history of their own. Whether you explore the landscape on foot or are interested in its cultural heritage, you will discover different sides of the village.

Landscape and Views

Menzberg is situated on a hill in the Napf region at 1,016 m above sea level and offers a 360° panorama. Oberlehn is even higher: at 1,110 m above sea level, it is the highest point in Menzberg and also offers panoramic views. In the autumn and winter months, Menzberg is often above the sea of fog. This seasonal feature adds to the views of the surrounding ridges, but should not be expected on every visit.

The hiking trails also let you experience the elevation and terrain. The route from Menznau to Menzberg crosses wooded hilltops and meadows. From Tschoppen, it follows the Alpine Panorama Trail No. 3 to the Oberlehn viewpoint, then reaches Menzberg along the ridge. This route combines varied scenery with the viewpoint at the highest point in Menzberg.

Hikes with Different Destinations

If you are looking for a hike that starts in Menzberg and ends at Wolhusen railway station, consider the Menzberg–Wolhusen route. It is 10.83 km long and rated moderate. The “Alpenpanoramaweg 3” signposts mark the route clearly; signage may change during maintenance work. Check the latest route information before setting out.

Another hike leads from Menzberg over the Napf to Holzwegen. This scenic ridge walk offers Alpine panoramas, impressive views down into the valleys and varied trails. The Menzberg–Wolhusen hike ends at Wolhusen railway station; the other route leads from Menzberg over the Napf to Holzwegen.

Churches and Chapels

The parish church of St. Theodul combines a clear architectural form with a precisely dated history. Its cornerstone was laid on 2 July 1809, and the solemn consecration followed on 11 November 1810. The church has simple classical forms. Inside, the altarpiece “Madonna and Child” is by Melchior Paul Deschwanden.

The St. Joder chapel stands at 945 m above sea level on the old route from Hergiswil to Menzberg, but is still within the municipality of Hergiswil. The Girislehn chapel also offers a glimpse into local religious history: it is in Steinhalden, 6125 Menzberg, was rebuilt and consecrated in 1993, and is dedicated to Saint Wendelin, the patron saint of livestock.

Fire Pits and Beach Chairs

There are several fire pits in different locations where you can take a break outdoors. The Paradisli barbecue area is freely accessible and open to everyone, provided the forest hut is not rented out. The barbecue area by Renggwald is about two kilometres from the village, in a sheltered clearing at the edge of the forest. The “Ofenloch-Rutsche” fire pit is in Blötti and is suitable for barbecuing and relaxing for visitors of all ages. Its location can be identified by a landmark: the fire pit is 50 metres east of the “Längebüelschür” hiking sign on the Alpine Panorama Trail.

The Fuchsloch fire pit is by a small waterfall and can only be reached on foot. It has a fire pit, a table and around 20 seats. Information about the facilities may change; check the current conditions before your visit. The sites differ not only in location, but also in the facilities and access conditions listed for each one.

The “Beach Chairs Above the Sea of Fog” offer includes comfortable beach chairs at seven locations. Three routes take between one and just under three hours. In the beach chairs, you can listen to village stories by Xaver Vogel, accompanied by music. They are accessible in all weather and at any time of day. Duration estimates and seasonal presentation details may change; check the latest information before your visit.

Plan Your Journey

Menzberg can be reached by train to Menznau, followed by a bus to the “Menzberg, Dorfplatz” stop. Check the latest connections before travelling. This makes it easy to plan your journey as well as choose between a hike, a visit to the religious buildings or a break at one of the fire pits.
