Nottwil in the canton of Lucerne combines historic buildings, circular trails, the ParaForum and the lakeside lido. When planning a trip, you can weigh up different interests: architectural history, a walk, an exhibition or activities by the water. Sidlerhof farm shop is another specific place to visit in the town.

Cultural history and buildings

The Catholic parish church of St. Mary was built in the Neo-Gothic style from 1868 to 1871, after the former church was destroyed by fire. A little over 300 years ago, Nottwil was a place of pilgrimage dedicated to Mary. The church built after the fire and the earlier pilgrimage history are thus two historical connections to the theme of Mary.

The chapel of St. Margarethen contains remains of a Gothic Margarethen cycle of wall paintings. The FlĂĽss Chapel was built at its present location in 1678; the area lies on the border between Nottwil and Ruswil.

The Mittler-Huprächtigen offers a different perspective on architectural history. Restored in 1990, the building is a Baroque Lucerne farmhouse and is considered one of the most beautiful and largest farmhouses in Central Switzerland. Its two attic floors were formerly used as storage and drying rooms, as well as a smokehouse. These historic functions add concrete details about the house’s former use to its architectural context.

Circular trails along Lake Sempach

Nottwil has scenic circular trails along Lake Sempach and through the hilly countryside. Two routes can be compared by length: the 7 “Flüss – Ober Merzeberg – around Säliwald” circular hike is 4.2 kilometres long. The Nottwil circular trail covers 12.36 kilometres and starts and ends in Nottwil. It passes through forests and offers views of Lake Sempach. This gives you the choice of a shorter or a longer circular hike; the Nottwil circular trail also includes forest and lake views in its route description.

ParaForum and lakeside lido

The ParaForum in Nottwil has an exhibition on spinal cord injuries. Its outdoor trail features ten stations on the theme of hope, around and inside the Swiss Paraplegic Centre. The exhibition and trail therefore focus on different themes.

Nottwil lakeside lido has a special lift on the jetty. It enables people with physical disabilities to enter the water more easily without help from another person. The lido also has a sandy beach and a small playground.

Local products and planning your visit

Sidlerhof farm shop in Nottwil sells seasonal fruit, as well as homemade jams, brandies and liqueurs. The fruit is available seasonally; the selection also includes several homemade products.

Tannenfels Castle is privately owned and not open to the public. For planning your trip, the other topics mentioned are therefore the best starting points if you want to explore Nottwil through its architectural history, circular trails, ParaForum, lakeside lido or local products.
