Vitznau: Hiking, Rigi and culture
Accommodation in Vitznau
Vitznau lies on the Lucerne Riviera between the southern slopes of the Rigi and Lake Lucerne. If you are looking for a hotel in Vitznau, you can base your choice on the themes you want to shape your stay: hiking, mountain railways or cultural history. Trails and attractions offer different highlights, from a signposted circular trail to the formerly top-secret artillery fortress and the regional museum in the old school and municipal building.
Hiking and mountain railways around Vitznau
For a hike with a clearly defined distance, the Vitznau circular trail offers a straightforward guide: it is 5.11 kilometres long, laid out as a circular route and rated as moderately difficult. The start and finish are at the Vitznau boat station. The signposted trail passes the MĂĽhlebach waterfall; along the way, you can discover the local flora. Its circular layout, length and the two natural highlights mentioned help you identify this route as a distinct hiking option.
The Vitznau circular tour is a different route: you return to the starting point via the Waldstätterweg No. 98 or by taking the cogwheel railway from Mittlerschwanden. If you would rather head for a mountain destination than take a circular route, you can choose the Vitznau–Rigi Kulm cogwheel railway. It takes passengers directly from Vitznau to Rigi Kulm in around 30 minutes.
Another mountain connection is the Vitznau–Hinterbergen cable car, which reaches the mountain station from Vitznau in just a few minutes. As operating arrangements may change, we recommend checking the latest information before your trip. Hinterbergen lies on the southern side of the Rigi at 1,100 metres above sea level, in a natural landscape with impressive biodiversity, and is a starting point for hikes in the Rigi area.
Wissifluh also combines a mountain railway ride with hiking opportunities: the hotel’s own Vitznau–Wissifluh cable car takes visitors to the viewpoint at the Wissifluh mountain restaurant, which offers panoramic views. This nostalgic cable car is one of the few with just a single continuous cable. From Wissifluh, hiking trails lead via Kuorez to Vitznau or Brunnen. You should also check the operating arrangements for this cable car before travelling.
Fortress, museum and Markuskirche
The Vitznau Fortress offers guided tours through tunnels, combat positions and supply areas, as well as a small hospital hidden inside the mountain. The formerly top-secret artillery fortress has been open to visitors as an attraction since 1998. Guests who have registered can visit it by prior arrangement on any of the 365 days of the year. If you plan a visit, you will need to register and make arrangements in advance.
The Vitznau-Rigi Museum is housed in Vitznau’s heritage-listed Old School and Municipal Building, built in 1894. It is the museum of the three Lucerne Rigi municipalities of Greppen, Vitznau and Weggis. The permanent exhibition covers the areas of land and people, the Rigi and its mountain railways, and tourism and Lake Lucerne. As a regional museum, it is just a few minutes’ walk from the bus, boat and Rigi railway stations.
Another historical highlight is Markuskirche Vitznau. It is considered the first and oldest Reformed church in the Lucerne countryside and was built in 1904 in the Neo-Romanesque-Gothic style. Together with the fortress and museum, it offers a different perspective on local history from the trails and mountain railways: here, the focus is on architectural history and religious architecture.
