Dierikon: Village Character, Church and Rontaler Höhenweg
Accommodation in Dierikon
Dierikon is a political municipality in the electoral district of Lucerne-Land in the Canton of Lucerne, Switzerland. The village combines a historic centre with notable buildings, the Church of the Holy Trinity and the Rontaler Höhenweg. The surrounding area lies in the Ron Valley and is characterised by farmland and woodland. Dierikon therefore offers different options for planning your trip: explore the village and its architectural history, or go for a hike in the surrounding area.
Village Character and Architectural History
Dierikon’s historic centre, the “Dörfli”, is classified as a site of national importance worthy of protection. It includes valuable farmhouses typical of the region, as well as a distinctive mill building with extensions from different periods. These buildings have different features: the farmhouses highlight regional traditions, while the mill building reflects expansion over several periods.
The history of the village chapel also spans several building phases. Master builder Wilhelm Keller constructed it in 1862/63, replacing an earlier building dating from 1675. From late 2018 to March 2020, the former village chapel was converted into a restaurant with a bar and lounge called “Omnia Dierikon”. This chronology places the later change of use in context, following the earlier building and the 19th-century chapel.
Distinct from the chapel is the Church of the Holy Trinity in Dierikon, which was consecrated on 18 June 1972. It has an altarpiece depicting the Trinity and stained-glass windows by Godi Hirschi. Relics from the old chapel lie beneath a nickel-plated plate in the altar. The bell tower also has distinctive features: the 15-metre-high, triangular wooden tower was built in 1976 and houses three bells made by the Rüetschi company in Aarau. The altarpiece, windows, relics and tower offer different points of reference for the church’s artistic and architectural history.
Hiking in the Ron Valley
The Rontaler Höhenweg is 14.7 kilometres long, connects the Lucerne area with Honau and passes through the municipalities of Dierikon, Ebikon, Gisikon, Honau and Root. On the section near Dierikon, the route passes the Götzentalbach stream, crosses the cantonal road and then reaches the Widacher farm. The 14.7 kilometres refer to the entire Höhenweg, not just the section near Dierikon.
A regional description mentions hiking trails in the area around Dierikon that are suitable for different levels of difficulty. This provides a different kind of guidance: the Rontaler Höhenweg’s total length is specified, while the information about difficulty levels applies to hiking trails in the surrounding area.
