Accommodation in Lajoux
Lajoux is a village in the Canton of Jura in Switzerland. When choosing a destination, the village offers several clearly distinct themes: three educational trails, karst formations, wooded pastures and ecclesiastical heritage. If you are looking for a hotel, first consider whether nature trails, landscapes or culture should be the focus of your stay.
Hiking trails with different themes
All three educational trails start at the village post office. The Sentier de l'eau offers panoramic views over the Franches-Montagnes; in the Les Beusses area, it includes the Gorges du Miéry with their potholes, as well as the Grotte de Lajoux.
The Sentier du fer includes a fen; Les Rotschets, with its panoramic views, is also part of this trail. The Sentier de la Chaux includes the Puits Willy and a peat bog. In the Béroie area, the Gouffre de Lajoux, also known as the Gouffre de Koby, is part of the trail.
This gives you a choice of different points of interest: panoramic views and water features characterise the Sentier de l'eau, a fen and lookout point the Sentier du fer, and a peat bog, the Puits Willy and a sinkhole the Sentier de la Chaux.
Karst and wooded pastures
The municipality of Lajoux includes caves, caverns, swallow holes and natural dolines, or sinkholes. These terms refer to different features: caves and caverns are underground cavities, swallow holes mark places where water drains underground, and dolines are natural depressions.
Bois-des-Joux is the only area in Lajoux that can still genuinely be described as a wooded pasture. In the Franches-Montagnes, wooded pastures are an essential part of the characteristic landscape.
CĂ´te-d'Oye includes 18 hectares of woodland. A 99-year agreement was signed with the Swiss Confederation to establish a nature reserve in this woodland. CĂ´te-d'Oye was established as the first forest reserve in the Canton of Jura.
Church and local culture
The church in Lajoux was renovated and redesigned by Silvio Casagrande. It houses eight stained-glass windows created by Coghuf, depicting the life of Christ from his mother's perspective. The altar, made of rough-hewn stone, and two wooden statues come from Bellelay.
Bec sur Lajoux is a monument associated with the artist Denis Schneider. The Girolle® is also still made in Lajoux: it is produced by Métafil-laGirolle SA, the company where it was invented.
More routes and activities
The start and end points of other hikes are also useful when planning routes. The Le Fer et l'Eau trail starts in Lajoux at the post office building. The Balade en Courtine hike starts and ends in Lajoux and goes as far as Bellelay.
L'Équipe à Sugus runs a riding school in Lajoux. It offers guided rides for up to seven people and carriage rides for up to four people. The different maximum group sizes can help you choose an activity to suit your group; check the current offer details before planning, as they may change.
