As a travel destination, Sagogn combines a cultural landscape, sacred buildings and archaeological traces with a range of hiking options. Trail lengths and seasonal conditions can help you choose the focus of your stay, whether historical paths, a circular hike or winter sports when snow conditions are good.

Cultural landscape and historic paths

Platta Pussenta is a natural landscape that has also been significantly shaped by people. It includes pastures, stone heaps, field boundaries and terraces, small oak forests, alders, fields, dry-stone walls, historic paths and old mills. Its flora and fauna are diverse and, in some cases, very rare. Platta Pussenta also features artificially created cup marks. They were probably made by a pre-Roman pagan people, possibly the Raetians.

In addition to Platta Pussenta, two historic paths intersect here. The old road through the Surselva ran from Laax to Schluein and was used until the 9th century. Another connecting path led from Sagogn via Plaun Larisch, Runcal and Gonda to Falera. The Mulin mill area documents the importance of the former agricultural and forestry economy, as well as the pre-industrial processes of grinding grain and sawing wood.

Churches and Casti Aspermont

The Catholic parish church of the Assumption of Mary is one of the best-preserved fully decorated church buildings of the early High Baroque period north of the Alps. Its present appearance dates to a complete reconstruction carried out between 1634 and 1640 by a master builder from Ticino or Misox. Beneath the gallery, on the southern nave wall, is a fragment of two High Gothic saint figures dating from around 1370 to 1390. The footprint of the Catholic church in Sagogn has remained unchanged for more than 1,500 years.

Sagogn’s Reformed church was built in 1743 and has an onion-shaped steeple. Casti Aspermont also reflects several building phases: by the 13th century, the complex already had a massive tower; in 1672, the Castelli family added an elegant hall building to the tower. The main wing, built onto the west side, essentially dates from before 1400. Casti Aspermont shapes the townscape of Vitg dado and is significant to the village’s history through its owners.

Archaeological traces

Archaeological evidence on Schiedberg castle hill, east of Sagogn, indicates continuous settlement from the Bronze Age to the High Middle Ages. The site contains the ruins of a High Medieval castle and remnants of a surrounding defensive structure with an enclosing wall. Remains of an early medieval church lie at Bregl da Heida. A Carolingian hall church with a horseshoe-shaped apse is identified as the Church of St. Columban, mentioned in the Tello Testament of 765. Bregl da Heida is also thought to have been the civic and economic centre of the historic settlement structure.

Hiking trails and orchids

The Senda da Sagogn is a 3.5-kilometre hiking trail through historic and cultural sites near the village. It starts at the Vitg dado PostBus stop by the schoolhouse. Along the Senda Sagogn, nine information boards share interesting facts about the village. For an alternative route, try the Senda d’orchideas: its western and eastern circular routes can be walked separately and are seven kilometres long in total. Each route has a fire pit, and the trail ends at the Crap Signina viewing platform.

Various orchid species bloom along the Senda d’orchideas from mid-May to early August. Different species come into bloom roughly every two weeks, although flowering times vary depending on the weather and season. Of the 73 wild orchid species found in Switzerland, 27 grow in the municipality of Sagogn; future surveys may change these figures. The Crap Signina viewing platform can also be a destination in its own right: it is about a 30-minute walk from Sagogn and offers views of Sagogn, the Val Mulin, the Ruinaulta and the area towards Ilanz. Check local access information before your visit.

A dense network of hiking trails and various bike tours wind through the forests of Sagogn, leading to forest lakes, viewpoints and other attractions. So, alongside historic village and cultural sites, you can choose forest trails and scenic destinations.

Winter and travel planning

When snow conditions are good, Sagogn has around 15.5 kilometres of groomed cross-country ski trails for classic and skating styles. Winter hiking trails run alongside the ski trails across the sunny Plaun da Sagogn plateau to Schluein. These conditions differ clearly from the hiking options available in the warmer months. The Rheinschlucht/Ruinaulta bus runs from Laax via Sagogn through the Rhine Gorge to Valendas. If you are planning a trip, check the current timetable.
