Waltensburg: Between Frescoes and Castles

Waltensburg combines medieval cultural history with a distinctive mountain landscape. When planning your trip, you can take inspiration from the frescoes in the village church, several castles and a range of hiking options. This makes it easy to choose a stay based on the things that interest you most.

Location and landscape

Waltensburg is a typical linear village on a broad terrace between Flém and the Rhine, about 300 metres above the valley floor. The village lies on the southern slope of the Vorderrhein valley. Waltensburg is the German name; Vuorz is the Romansh name, and the village is also known as Uors la Foppa.

The changes in elevation also shape the area: it stretches from Run Dado at 745 metres to Ruchi at 3,107 metres. A mountain range with Muttenstock, at 3,089 metres, forms the northern boundary; farther south, Piz d’Artgas rises to 2,787 metres. The village terrace and much higher peaks thus offer distinct aspects of the landscape.

Church, frescoes and museum

The Church of Saint Desiderius and Saint Leodegar was built in the 11th century and first mentioned in 1241. Its Gothic frescoes were painted around 1350 by the artist known as the Waltensburg Master. You can visit the frescoes independently every day between 09:00 and 20:00; check visiting hours before your trip.

Opposite the church, the Casa Cadruvi houses the Waltensburg Master Museum. Its permanent exhibition offers insights into the artist’s work, significance and context. A folklore exhibition complements this focus with insights into the everyday lives of earlier generations. The church and museum therefore offer two different ways to explore the subject: the wall paintings in their original setting and an exhibition about their artistic and historical context.

Castles and medieval history

One of the area’s distinctive structures is Kropfenstein Cave Castle, also known as Casti Grotta. The three-storey structure dates from the 13th century and stands on the edge of a sheer cliff. The described route descends steeply to the castle and passes through a low doorway. At the eastern entrance, the path follows a narrow ledge around a corner; it has been widened and fitted with railings. Check local conditions before visiting.

Jörgenberg is considered the most impressive and oldest medieval castle complex in the Surselva. The walled castle grounds measure about 100 × 70 metres, excluding the moat. A path leads to two stone pillars from a former gallows, about 600 metres southwest of the Jörgenberg castle ruins; this detour is part of the documented return route.

Hikes and guided tours

The hike to the Munt Sogn Gieri castle ruins starts in the centre of Waltensburg. It is 3.6 kilometres long and takes one hour; weather and trail conditions can affect walking time. A winter alternative is the snowshoe hike to Munt Sogn Gieri. It starts in Waltensburg Demvitg and follows woodland and forest roads. This tour depends on snow and weather conditions.

On a guided tour of Jörgenberg and the Gallows Hill, you can also learn about the historic court district of Waltensburg and the witch hunts. The meeting point is the Vuorz Cadruvi PostBus stop. Seasonal activities and mountain railway

“The Hidden Castle” is a seasonal activity for 2026. It invites children accompanied by adults to explore Kropfenstein Castle, the forest and the surrounding area. Puzzles and tasks bring the Middle Ages to life; the activity takes about 90 minutes. The activity booklet can be collected from Hotel Ucliva or the tourist information office in Brigels. Check the dates and current collection arrangements in advance.

The Waltensburg/Curtginet chairlift takes you from 1,102 metres above sea level to the Alp Dado mountain station at 1,859 metres; the ride takes 20 minutes.
