Rhäzüns is a village and political municipality in the Imboden Region in the Canton of Graubünden. The village lies on the lower reaches of the Hinterrhein, before it joins the Vorderrhein. The Rhine floodplains and local history shape your stay: the history stretches from early written records to medieval and Baroque church buildings. This makes it easy to choose your destination based on your interests in landscape, routes or culture.

Rhine floodplains and routes

The Rhäzüns Rhine floodplains are among the most intact floodplain landscapes in Switzerland and are of national importance. You can book guided tours of the Rhäzüns Hinterrhein floodplain landscape through Chur Tourism; confirm availability before your trip. A guided tour and a cycling route offer different ways to incorporate the landscape into your stay.

The Rhäzüns Rhine Floodplains cycling route starts and ends in Rhäzüns. It is 18 km long, includes 300 m of ascent, passes Sogn Gieri and then returns to Rhäzüns. The distance and ascent give you concrete details for planning your tour. Trail conditions can vary depending on the season and weather.

The Chur Rhine Valley Culture & Enjoyment Route also passes Sogn Gieri. As an option, it offers a detour to Rhäzüns to visit Sogn Paul. The routes therefore differ in one practical respect: the Rhäzüns Rhine Floodplains route starts and ends in Rhäzüns, while you can plan a detour to Sogn Paul on the Culture & Enjoyment Route. Here, too, route conditions can vary depending on the season and weather.

Connections and elevation

The Rhäzüns–Feldis aerial cableway connects Feldis with Rhäzüns and, in turn, with the valley. Hiking and mountain biking are possible from Feldis; these activities are seasonal. Check the timetable and operating status before your trip. The valley station has good rail and bus connections, plenty of parking spaces and a charging station for electric cars. Confirm transport and facility details again before setting off.

The Rhäzünser Alp, also known as Alp Sura, lies at 1,760 m above sea level above Rhäzüns. It can be reached via hiking trails; a signposted mountain bike route, official number 262, also leads to the alp. The elevation indicates the location of the destination, while the 300 m of ascent refers to the Rhäzüns Rhine Floodplains cycling route. This lets you compare two different measurements: the elevation of a place and the ascent of a route.

Churches and local history

Rhäzüns was first mentioned in a document in 840 under the name “Raezunne”. Rhäzüns and Bonaduz originally formed a parish, whose parish church was St. George’s Church. Sogn Paul lies on the southwestern edge of the village. The former parish church now serves as a cemetery church. Its authentically medieval interior contains works of art spanning four centuries. The medieval church building was extended around the burial site of the Barons of Rhäzüns and a Baroque nave.

Rhäzüns Castle was first mentioned in 1288 and historically guarded the entrance to the Domleschg. The castle is not open to the public. Check locally in case the access arrangements have changed.
