Accommodation in Scharans
Scharans is a municipality in the Viamala Region of the Canton of Graubünden, Switzerland. The villagescape of Scharans is of national importance in the Canton of Graubünden. Historic buildings and the Bardill Atelier create distinct architectural accents; hiking and cycling routes offer another way to explore the village.
Historic Buildings in the Villagescape
The Reformed village church was built in 1490 by the Carinthian master builder Andreas Bühler. The Gees House dates from the mid-16th century and features well-preserved façade paintings by Hans Ardüser. The Balzer House dates from 1668 and is decorated with painted aphorisms and the coats of arms of the Three Leagues. These dates reflect different historical periods: the church, the Gees House, and the Balzer House each have their own building history.
Another landmark is the linden tree in the church square. It is said to be more than 800 years old.
The Bardill Atelier: Concrete, Rosettes, and a Garden Circle
The Bardill Atelier adds a different architectural accent. The red-tinted concrete building has no windows or roof and is adorned with 150 rosettes of varying sizes. It stands in Scharans’s historic village center and was completed in 2007 after 18 months of construction. A large opening in the front façade offers a view of the circle that encloses the garden. The materials, rosettes, and relationship between the façade opening and the garden are distinctive features of the building.
Getting Around on Foot or by Bike
A valley hike leads from Tomils via Paspels to Scharans and takes around two hours. This is an approximate duration, as conditions can vary by season. Both the starting point and the endpoint are accessible by PostBus. Check the timetable before setting off.
For cycling, the Burgen-Route Domleschg runs from Thusis via Scharans and Rothenbrunnen back to Thusis. The route is 24 kilometers long, with 400 meters of elevation gain. Its easily rideable paths are suitable for leisure bikes and e-bikes. Check the latest route information before setting off.
The hike ends in Scharans, while the cycling route returns to Thusis. The routes therefore differ both in how you travel and in their endpoints. The hike is listed with an approximate duration; the cycling route’s distance and elevation gain are the specific planning details.
