Flerden on the Heinzenberg: Hiking, Village History and Hotels
Accommodation in Flerden
Flerden is a peaceful municipality on the sunny Heinzenberg; its well-maintained landscape is shaped by agriculture. When planning a trip, you can focus on both the village itself and its walking and hiking routes. If you are looking for a hotel in Flerden, you can tailor your stay to your preferred focus: village history, a themed walk or a route with Flerden as its destination, a stop along the way or a place to rest.
Routes with different connections to the village
The Flerden walking trail has nine stops featuring themed stories. You can get a free Walking Trail MiniGuide brochure at the starting point by Flerden municipal hall, in front of the waste disposal building. The Fountain Trail has its own key points: it starts at the schoolhouse and ends at the old school and rectory.
The Heinzenberg Mountain Lakes hike ends in Flerden at an elevation of 1,231 m. On the Mazza-Cula route, Flerden is on the way from Masein and makes a good place to stop for refreshments; the return to Masein follows a different route. The Heinzenberger Dörferroute MTB Local Route No. 622 passes through Flerden and then goes via Masein back to Thusis. Check local trail conditions before setting out.
Another route, the Heinzenberg Central Circular Route, follows a good network of paths into Flerden village centre and then descends via the farms of Quadra and Dim to Masein. The village’s role therefore varies depending on the route: Flerden is the endpoint of the Mountain Lakes hike, a stop on the Mazza-Cula route and part of the MTB route. For the Central Circular Route, the village centre and the onward route via Quadra and Dim to Masein are specified.
Village history in architecture and tradition
The nave of the Reformed church belongs to a Romanesque complex built around 1300; its semicircular apse was excavated. The remains of a mural, also dating from around 1300, have been preserved on the north wall of the nave. It depicts an angel in the orant position with two companions. The church also has a timber-framed bell tower dating from the late Middle Ages.
The Grosshof of Flerden was mentioned in 1156 as “Flirden” and, together with the farmstead of Urmein, belonged to Cazis Abbey. The history of the chapel in Flerden, dedicated to Saint Leonard, dates back to 1466. The Mazzaspiel is also part of the village’s traditions: its playing pieces appear in the municipal coat of arms. The fountain at Plattas is the oldest fountain in Flerden.
Practical information for your visit
The village shop stocks a wide range of everyday essentials; its café is considered a popular meeting place. So alongside the walking and hiking routes, village life is also a practical focus when planning your trip. The PostBus takes you from Flerden to Thusis in about fifteen minutes; Chur is about 20 minutes away.
