Granges: Snowshoe Trail, Landscape and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Granges
Granges (Veveyse) lies at an altitude of about 753 m on a spur at the northern edge of the Mont Pèlerin ridge, around 7 km as the crow flies north of Vevey. The slopes of Mont-Cheseau shape the surrounding area, with gently rolling green landscapes of meadows, forests and small streams. There are several specific ways to enjoy a stay here: the Mont-Chesau snowshoe trail, walks and bike rides in the surrounding area, and the Chapelle Saint-Nicolas and the Veveyse Musique Parade.
Mont-Chesau snowshoe trail
The Mont-Chesau snowshoe trail is a moderate 7 km loop that takes about three hours. It starts and ends at the Village stop in the centre of Granges. The trail climbs through the forest to Mont-Cheseaux and passes the Chalet de la Moille. Views include the Vaud Alps, the Fribourg Pre-Alps, La DĂ´le, Chasseral and Lake Geneva; visibility depends on the weather. As this is a loop, you return to the starting point at the Village stop, which you can take into account when planning your journey.
When snow cover is limited or at the end of the season, the trail remains accessible with good footwear and walking poles. A public car park for the snowshoe trail is available behind the Chapelle Saint-Nicolas; sanitary facilities are accessible at the municipal administration. Trail conditions, transport connections, and information about the car park and sanitary facilities may change. Check them before setting out. If travelling by public transport, pay particular attention to the current connections to the Village stop.
Landscape and trails in the surrounding area
The municipality includes molasse hills in the upper Broye catchment area. The Corbéron and Biorda streams flow through broad valley basins and meet at Pré de Sales. The area around Granges is well suited to walks and bike rides. Alongside the specific loop trail, these activities can also be focal points for your trip.
The Alpage picnic area is accessible on foot, but not to people with reduced mobility. As access conditions may change, check the latest information before visiting.
Chapelle Saint-Nicolas and music
The Chapelle Saint-Nicolas in Granges (Veveyse) is classified as a Category B cultural property. Its Romanesque bell tower gives the building the appearance of a fortress. The nave has eight stained-glass windows, and the choir has two. The chapel also has a Stations of the Cross created by Jules Schmid. Its distinctive architectural form is complemented by several specific details of its furnishings.
A male choir was founded when the chapel was built to accompany religious services. The Chapelle Saint-Nicolas continues to be used for weddings, baptisms and concerts. The Veveyse Musique Parade is a gathering devoted to folk music, held in Granges.
