La Roche Fr combines a distinctive valley landscape with trails on La Berra, activities on Lake Gruyère and historic buildings. The municipality stretches from the lakeshore to the summit of La Berra, then descends towards the Singine slope. When planning a trip, you can therefore consider both the lakeside scenery and the hiking and winter sports opportunities at higher elevations.

Valley, Lake and Landscape

The La Roche valley runs from north to south; the Serbache flows through it and empties into Lake Gruyère. Its bowl-shaped, deeply indented form is characterised by relatively steep slopes and two extensive plateaus used for agriculture. From there, the terrain rises towards La Berra and Combert. If you want to experience the landscape not only by the lake but also across varying elevations, the municipality offers a range of geographical perspectives.

The Sentier du Lac de La Gruyère offers views of the Pre-Alps and turquoise coves. It is considered easy and is easily accessible by public transport. This sets it apart, in the features described, from the six marked hiking trails on La Berra, which vary in difficulty. Check trail conditions and seasonal operating schedules before setting out. On guided hikes, experts can help you understand the landscape, observe animals and identify plants; check that these tours are available before booking.

Activities on La Berra

La Berra offers a range of activities beyond hiking. The nature-oriented disc golf course is also accessible to younger children. Access is via the Télémixte, followed by an approximately 20-minute descent on foot from the mountain station; it depends on the resort being open. La Roche also has several mountain bike and e-bike routes. The Berra Bike Park has two downhill trails for mountain bikes or e-bikes, with a total length of 9 kilometres, and operates seasonally.

The La Berra–La Roche winter sports area includes 10 local downhill runs and 20 lifts; winter hiking and snowshoeing are also listed. The École suisse de ski de La Berra offers lessons and support for learning to ski and snowboard. Course times are seasonal. On weekends during the summer and winter seasons, TPF buses connect La Roche with La Berra. For specific travel arrangements, check the current timetable.

Restaurant L’Unique offers culinary excursions on Lake Gruyère. The trip uses a boat that can accommodate 6 to 9 people; two themed menus are available for the lake experience. Menu options and booking arrangements may change. If you are planning an excursion, check the current conditions in advance.

Regional Products and Buildings

The Fromagerie de la Roche processes milk into products including Gruyère AOP, Vacherin Fribourgeois AOP, yoghurt, quark and butter. The Foire de La Roche offers another insight into the region’s products: this public market featuring handicrafts and regional products takes place every year on the last Saturday in October. Exact dates and the programme vary from year to year, and the exhibitors also change.

Historic buildings include the Château de La Roche, a twin-castle ruin that is heavily deteriorated and overgrown, on a narrow, rocky ridge. It was first mentioned in 1164 as “castrum de Rupe”. The most significant surviving part is the tower of Ulrich de Vuippens: it is approximately 12 metres high and about 10 metres wide, and has no openings. The described route from Fribourg is by bus route 234 to La Roche, village, followed by bus route 235 to the Sur-Momont stop. From there, it is about a 25-minute walk along an unmarked forest path to the ruin.

The parish church, Eglise paroissiale Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption, was consecrated in 1656 and has a surviving Baroque altar in the choir. The historic inn Ancienne pinte de Pierre Théraulaz is located at Chemin du Stand 7; a farmhouse is at Vers les Roulin 1. There are also enormous sculptures by artist Yves Tinguely, who is based in Rossens, around Lake Gruyère.
