Heiligenschwendi: Winter Trails, E-Bikes and Panoramic Views
Accommodation in Heiligenschwendi
Heiligenschwendi is a health resort above Lake Thun, offering views of the lake and the Bernese Alps. A 9 km winter hiking trail, several themed adventure trails and an e-bike stage are among the main considerations when choosing a destination. Other attractions include a family ski area in the village, a farm shop selling regional products and viewpoints in the surrounding area. Depending on whether you want to hike, plan winter activities or get around by e-bike, you can discover different sides of the village.
Winter Hiking and Seasonal Trails
The Heiligenschwendi loop trail is 9 km long and classified as moderately difficult. As a winter hiking trail, it passes through wintry forests; along the way, views stretch across the sea of fog to the Bernese Alps. The starting point and finish are at the Alpenblick bus stop. Together, the length, difficulty rating and starting point provide practical guidance for planning the loop, while the views define the route’s scenic character.
Winter hiking is part of a wider range of seasonal activities: cross-country skiing, sledging and snowshoeing are also available in Heiligenschwendi. There is also a family ski area with a children’s lift in the village. Another winter attraction is the Christmas Trail. It opens on the first Sunday of Advent each year and ends on January 6, Epiphany; the traditional Christmas story is told at various stations. So, alongside activities in the snow, visitors can also choose a trail with storytelling stations.
Adventure Trails with Different Themes
The Owl Trail is an educational, play and adventure trail for the whole family. It starts and ends at the Alpenblick bus stop; free parking is available at the trailhead near the tennis court in Heiligenschwendi. This makes it easy to plan the loop and its starting point together.
The Spycher Trail is divided into a valley-side section and a mountain-side section. Information boards stand beside each Spycher. On the Sirius Planet Trail, the path branches off at Tschingelallmi towards Heiligenschwendi. Its information boards explain the planets and give a sense of the distances between celestial bodies in space. The trails therefore have different focuses: a family adventure, information at the Spycher, and astronomy.
E-Biking and Hiking
The “royal stage” of the Heart Route runs from Thun to Langenthal and climbs to Heiligenschwendi by e-bike. The STI Bike Shuttle runs from Berntorplatz in Thun either to Goldiwil, Wendeplatz, or to Heiligenschwendi, Alpenblick; it provides direct access to the Goldiwheel or Rabenfluh trail. The Heart Route is a longer e-bike stage between two places, while the shuttle specifies stops and trail access points. Check the shuttle timetable before setting off.
Heiligenschwendi is also a starting point for hikes, with trails through fir forests and across lush meadows. You can therefore include the longer e-bike route, direct trail access or hikes through forests and meadows as different activities in your travel plans.
Viewpoints in the Surrounding Area
Nearby, the 16 m-high Blueme observation tower offers views of the Bernese Alps, the Emmental, the Jura and Lake Thun. Picnics are possible at a fire pit. Blueme can be reached on foot or by bike via various routes. Another nearby viewpoint is Niesenbänkli, where there is a barbecue area with views of Lake Thun and the Niesen. The viewpoints offer different highlights: from the tower, the panorama extends to the Emmental and the Jura, while at Niesenbänkli the lake and the Niesen are in view.
Regional Products and Local History
The SWISSHOF farm shop is in Heiligenschwendi and sells regional products. It brings together produce from various farms and small-scale producers within a 20 km radius in one place. A point of cultural and historical interest is the chapel, which a national church and a free church built jointly in 1925.
