Hasliberg: Hiking Trails, Lischen and Alpine Farming
Accommodation in Hasliberg
Hasliberg brings together hiking trails, a distinctive wetland landscape and alpine farming, along with seasonal summer and winter activities. If you are looking for a hotel in Hasliberg, it helps to first match your travel dates to your plans: in summer, Lischen and the trails take centre stage, while winter brings snow sports and night skiing. The settlement pattern that has developed over centuries is also part of the destination’s character.
Hiking Trails and Wetland Landscape
All the alpine pastures in the municipality of Hasliberg are connected by hiking trails. For an idea of how long a hike takes, try the Hasliberg Village Trail: it runs from Hasliberg Reuti to Hasliberg Hohfluh and takes about two and a half hours. For comparison, the Käserstatt–Mägisalp winter hiking trail is 3 km long, takes about 55 minutes and has an elevation gain of 70 metres. Snow and access conditions may affect whether this seasonal winter route is available; check before setting out.
Lischen is a wetland of around 14 hectares at an altitude of 1,500 metres and is of national importance. When the flowers are in bloom, numerous orchids and cottongrasses grow there. The gondola’s mid-station on the route from Wasserwendi to Käserstatt is located in the heart of the area. There are information boards, a kiosk with refreshments and a wide path, which is also suitable for visitors with limited mobility. Check whether refreshments are available before your visit.
Alpine Farming and a Historic Village Landscape
The many small plots and the Lischen huts make Lischen a testament to the traditional practice of harvesting litter. The land is traditionally mown just once a year; the cuttings are used as bedding, known in Bernese German as “Lische”. Hasliberg’s settlement pattern, shaped over centuries, is also reflected in its many farmhouses, groups of buildings, gardens and old paths.
All the milk produced on Hasliberg’s alpine pastures is made into alpine cheese, Mutschli, butter and Ziger. Products associated with Hasliberg’s alpine farming include Alpine Cheese AOP (Hääggen), seasonal Mutschli, dried meat, meat and bread. Many farms produce seasonal local goods throughout the year: dairy products and meat, fruit, vegetables and herbs, eggs, honey and wool. These are sold directly or supplied to local retailers.
A recurring event celebrating alpine farming is the traditional “Chästeilet” on Mägisalp in Hasliberg. Every September, the alpine herders celebrate as the cheese they have made is divided among the farmers. Check the current event date before visiting.
Summer and Winter Activities
In summer, the Hasliberg Marble Run Trail follows the hiking path from the Bidmi mid-station to the Reuti valley station and features 13 varied marble runs. As a seasonal attraction, it’s best to check operating conditions before travelling. The Meiringen-Hasliberg cableways serve an excursion and snow sports area in the Bernese Oberland between 600 and 2,500 metres above sea level; timetables vary by season.
For night skiing, the blue runs between Mägisalp and the Reuti valley station are lit from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm. On selected days, night skiing is offered together with an evening at a mountain hut. A sled run to the Bidmi mid-station is an optional part of night skiing.
The Bidmi Ski Hare Land is next to the Bidmi mid-station and can be reached by cable car. The safe area is run and supervised by a team from the ski school; children can take their first steps on skis there. Facilities include a magic carpet or conveyor belt, beginner lifts, a snow carousel, snow tubing, an igloo village and a slide tower. Check snow conditions and operating status before travelling; seasonal availability of the facilities may vary.
