Visitors choosing Hondrich as a destination will find a rural setting and two distinct points of interest: Festung Heinrich, with its history, and the erratic boulder Rütistein. There is also a hiking route connecting Aeschi, Hondrich and Spiez. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between the character of the village, the guided tour of the fortress and the hiking option: the tour takes place at a regular weekly time, while the detour adds an approximate amount of time to the hike.

Hondrich between hill and valley

Hondrich lies between Hondrich Hill and Faulensee, on a moraine hill that stretches from Krattigstrasse to the banks of the Kander at Stegweide. Well-maintained farms underscore the rural character of the local district. Spiez railway station can be reached from Hondrich in just a few minutes by public transport. The Spiezwiler motorway exit is also nearby.

Festung Heinrich: history and guided tours

The Heinrich command post (A1956) was built between 1941 and 1943. The fortress houses the permanent exhibition “Artillery Observation Company.” The construction period and the exhibition offer different insights: the construction period gives the site its historical context, while the exhibition title identifies its thematic focus.

Its structural features include straight main tunnels measuring 320 metres in length. Access to the fortress is via an uphill forest path; trail conditions may affect access. For individuals, a guided tour takes place every Tuesday at 6 p.m. throughout the year. Check the tour time before your trip. These times refer to different things: the individual tour takes place on Tuesdays at 6 p.m., while the detour adds about 30 minutes to the hike.

Hiking between Aeschi, Hondrich and Spiez

A hiking route from Aeschi descends gently to the neighbouring village of Hondrich. The route offers an optional detour up Hondrich Hill to the historic Heinrich fortress; it adds about 30 minutes to the hike. This is an approximate additional time for the detour. The route then continues through Hondrich Forest to Spiez.

This makes it possible to plan the detour as an addition to the hike, while the gentle descent describes the section of the trail down to Hondrich. The route thus combines a clearly defined stretch down to the village with the option of including Hondrich Hill and the fortress before continuing through Hondrich Forest to Spiez.

The Rütistein erratic boulder

The Rütistein erratic boulder is located on Rüttistrasse in Hondrich. It consists of quartz sandstone and originates from the area around Innertkirchen in the Aare Valley. Its location in Hondrich and its origin in the Aare Valley represent different geographical connections. For travellers interested in geology, the boulder offers a tangible point of interest; together with the fortress, it allows visitors to explore Hondrich from both a geological and a historical perspective.
