Worb: Castle History and Village Character
Accommodation in Worb
Worb combines a largely preserved village character with modern buildings that shape the townscape. The castle, church, historic routes and leisure activities offer different ways to experience the town during your stay.
Castle, Village and Architectural History
Worb Castle is a medieval castle with a Baroque residential wing. Its core probably dates from the 11th century; the high medieval complex is dated to around 1200. The building sections thus point to different phases in the town’s history: the early core and the complex dating to around 1200 stand alongside the later Baroque residence.
Neuschloss is another chapter in this architectural history. The Baroque castle and manor house were built for Franz Ludwig von Graffenried from 1734 to 1737. In the late 18th and 19th centuries, the New Castle in Worb served members of the ruling family as a year-round residence or country house. Its varied uses show that a manor house did not necessarily serve the same function throughout.
Schlossstalden connects the village of Worb with the castle and was once a through-route towards Enggistein and the Emmental. It was also a historic crafts and trades district. This included the use of the water power of the Enggistein stream, which has been diverted from the Biglen stream since the 14th century. Water power was also important to other trades in Worb: it drove a mill, smithies and a sawmill, and was used for grinding and fulling.
Worb’s church can also be dated: it dates back to the 11th century and is an early Romanesque hall church. Its tower dates from 1430. At the beginning of the 16th century, the nave, tower, sacristy and choir were rebuilt or newly constructed. Stained glass, choir stalls and the baptismal font are also among its noted features. The castle and church thus offer different ways to explore Worb’s architectural history.
History Trail and Leisure Activities
The history trail has 20 stops and runs from “Bachteilete” near Metzgerhüsi to the RBS railway station in Worb. Its stops and two endpoints give the route a clear structure. Those interested in local history can explore it as a route connecting various places within Worb.
The Vitaparcours in Wislewald offers a different way to find your bearings: it is about 3,100 metres long and has a total of 15 stations with various exercises. Comparing the two activities, the history trail is defined by its 20 stops and the route between the stated endpoints; for the Vitaparcours, its approximate length and exercise stations are the specific points of reference. This lets you consider local history and exercise as different priorities when planning your trip, without making assumptions about walking time or difficulty.
Wislepark includes a 50-metre Olympic swimming pool. During the winter season, Wislepark also has two curling rinks. The activities therefore differ both in type and operating season: the Olympic pool is described as a swimming pool, while curling is specifically associated with winter operations. If you are planning a visit to Wislepark, it is advisable to check the current operating information.

In 1898, the Bern–Worb railway ran into the village centre; from 1913, the Worblental railway connected Worb with neighbouring municipalities.
The Worb weekly market, held on Saturdays at Bärenplatz, is part of the local weekly routine. The market complements the historic and leisure activities with a connection to everyday life in the town. As market arrangements may change, it is advisable to check the current dates before visiting.
