Stechelberg: Hiking and Waterfalls in the Lauterbrunnen Valley
Accommodation in Stechelberg
Stechelberg is a small village in the Bernese Oberland and a locality within the municipality of Lauterbrunnen. It lies in the Lauterbrunnen Valley, surrounded by steep slopes, waterfalls and a striking mountain backdrop. Hiking and nature experiences are part of the village’s character, as is the history of mountaineering. For planning your trip, there are different trail options: from the Lauterbrunnen–Stechelberg hike to the normal route towards the Schmadri Hut.
Valley, Mountain Backdrop and Waterfalls
The road through the Lauterbrunnen Valley ends in Stechelberg. Cable cars connect the village with Gimmelwald, MĂĽrren and the Schilthorn; a footpath also connects it to Trachsellauenen. This brings different routes together at the end of the valley, while the steep slopes and mountain backdrop frame the landscape.
The Mürrenbach Falls originate above Mürren and plunge down the steep Mürrenfluh almost to the valley floor near Stechelberg. At 417 metres, they are considered Switzerland’s highest waterfall. The cable car from the Stechelberg valley station to Mürren passes close to the Mürrenbach Falls. Their source, course and height describe different aspects of this waterfall.
The TrĂĽmmelbach Falls are another striking natural attraction: they are listed in the Federal Inventory of Landscapes and Natural Monuments of National Importance. Weather permitting, they are generally open daily from early April to early November. At the beginning and end of the season, check the exact opening hours.
Hiking Trails and Different Tours
The UNESCO Trail begins at the information board at the gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage Site in Stechelberg. From there, it follows the old packhorse trail into the Upper Lauterbrunnen Valley. The old route gives the trail a distinct historical connection; its starting point in Stechelberg is also easy to locate.
The most direct access to the Hinteres Lauterbrunnental nature reserve is from Stechelberg via Trachsellauenen. The normal route from Stechelberg to the AACB Schmadri Hut is listed as taking 3–4 hours, with 1,370 metres of ascent. Alpine conditions require you to check current conditions before setting off.
Another hike leads from Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg. It is rated easy, has 161 metres of ascent and ends at the Hotel Stechelberg postbus stop. By comparison, the normal route to the Schmadri Hut involves considerably more elevation gain and has a stated duration of 3–4 hours. These details help distinguish the two hikes by their respective elevation profiles and, for the hut route, by duration as well.
Stechelberg therefore offers several specific themes for your trip: the valley and its waterfalls, trails with a historical connection, and hikes with different elevation profiles. If you are looking for a hotel for your trip, these destinations and route descriptions can help you decide what to focus on during your stay.
