Bettingen is one of the two rural municipalities in the Canton of Basel-Stadt and borders Germany. Compared with the urban surroundings of Basel, it is considered a quieter alternative. Hiking trails, a historic village centre and various attractions on St. Chrischona give a stay a range of different focal points. If you are looking for a hotel, you can plan your trip around whether you mainly want to hike, experience local history or attend a festival.

Hiking, Nature and Views

A dense network of cantonal hiking trails leads through forests and along fields to the Chrischonagrat ridge and its viewpoints. The marked routes are suitable for short walks as well as extended day hikes to Germany or Riehen.

The Butterfly Trail is an easy-to-follow themed nature trail in the form of a circular route. Information boards provide details about native butterflies, their habitats and important food plants. The trail combines exercise with a specific nature theme.

Mountain bikers can use an official freeride trail on St. Chrischona. It starts at the foot of the television tower and leads through the forest towards Bettingen. The route includes jumps, berms and challenging sections.

The viewing platform on the tower of St. Chrischona Church is the highest publicly accessible point in the Canton of Basel-Stadt. From there, you can enjoy a 360° panoramic view over the trinational Basel region. The Inspiration Trail also runs on Chrischona Berg: its six stops offer audio and visual content accessible via QR code and pass historic listed buildings.

Village Centre and History

The historic village centre of Bettingen is listed in the Swiss Inventory of Cultural Property of National Significance (ISOS) as a site of national importance. Historic buildings are well preserved around Lindenplatz and along the upper village street. Those interested in historic townscapes will find a different focus here than on the trails through forests and fields.

The church on St. Chrischona was built in 1340 and became popular as a pilgrimage site in the 15th century. On 8 March 1840, Christian Friedrich Spittler founded the St. Chrischona Theological Seminary in the church, which had fallen into disrepair at the time. These milestones trace the story from the medieval building through its historic role to the founding of the seminary.

Another destination for hikes and walks is historic boundary stone No. 100 on the Chrischonagrat ridge. It stands directly on the national border with Germany and is significant both geographically and historically.

The church is located in the centre of Bettingen. It is open during the day and invites visitors to take a moment for quiet and prayer.

Leisure Activities for Different Interests

The publicly accessible grounds of the St. Chrischona Conference Centre include a large adventure playground as well as indoor and outdoor sports facilities. Groups can rent the sports facilities for events and tournaments.

The meeting area of the Generations Trail offers children and parents activity equipment and seating; there is a zip line in the adjacent forest. On Chrischona Berg, a horizontal, three-metre-long bouldering block offers three set routes of varying difficulty.

Bettingen’s outdoor swimming pool has a multipurpose pool and a children’s paddling pool. As a seasonal facility, its opening dates vary. The two playgrounds close to the centre of Bettingen include, among other things, a play castle, a swing, a slide and a table tennis table; their facilities may change over time.

You can find agricultural produce for direct sale at the farm shop at Brohegasse 9. The selection includes seasonal products grown on the farm and from the region.

Annual Events

The Bettingen Autumn Festival is held every two years at the farm at Brohegasse 9. This traditional event offers insights into local customs and agriculture.

The lantern procession takes place on St. Chrischona every November. The Riehen-Bettingen parish helps organise it; as a local pre-Advent tradition, it is primarily aimed at families.

The Christmas market on Chrischona Berg runs for two days and is held in the Eben-Ezer Hall. The programme includes handmade gifts, food and drink, contemplative music and activities for children. If you would like to plan your trip around a festival, check the relevant dates in advance.
