Birsfelden lies where the Birs meets the Rhine. The Birs forms the western boundary with the city of Basel. To the north and northeast, the Rhine marks the natural boundary with Basel, Riehen in the canton of Basel-Stadt, and Grenzach-Wyhlen on the border between Germany and Switzerland. From Birsfelden, you can reach Basel by tram and bus or on foot along the Rhine in just a few minutes. As a travel destination, Birsfelden thus combines riverside and green spaces in the town with a short connection to its neighbouring city.

The Rhine, the Birs and green retreats

The Am Stausee biotope is a nature reserve covering about one hectare, with a pond, species-rich flower meadows and dense hedges of native shrubs and trees. It has been known as Birsfelden’s green oasis since 1983. It provides a distinctive natural feature within a townscape shaped by the Birs and the Rhine.

Birschöpfli lies in the triangle between the mouth of the Birs and the Rhine. Its spacious green area, with shade-providing trees, is suitable for playing and relaxing; it is also a starting point for a refreshing swim in the Rhine. Green spaces and old, shade-providing trees characterise the popular local recreation area on the power station island. Birsfelden therefore offers a variety of riverside and green spaces.

The Barfusspark barefoot park is located on the Rhine promenade, close to the Birsfelden power station. The circular route is around 300 metres long and includes a variety of stations. It complements the open recreation areas with a dedicated circular path, whose length you can take into account when planning your day.

The power station: a riverside landmark and hiking destination

The Birsfelden power station was completed in 1954 and is one of the Basel region’s most important examples of post-war modernism. It spans the entire width of the Rhine and connects the banks of Birsfelden and Kleinbasel. Here, the riverside setting and the architecture of the structure meet directly.

The four-hour Three-Country Hiking Trail takes you past the hydroelectric power station; the route can be shortened as much as you like. If you plan to take this trail, check the duration and access before setting out. This information can help you fit the hike into your stay.

Museum, local history and performing arts programme

The Birsfelden Museum is housed in the town’s oldest school building, built in 1853. The museum has a historical archive and regularly hosts art exhibitions and exhibitions on historical themes. Topics and dates vary, so it is worth checking which exhibitions are on before your visit.

The history of the mouth of the Birs goes back further: Stone Age and Bronze Age finds, as well as the remains of a Roman watchtower in Sternenfeld, attest to early settlement. Birsfelder Hof was already known in the High Middle Ages. These historical connections add evidence from earlier periods to the story told by the museum and the old school building.

ROXY Birsfelden is a venue and production space for the independent contemporary theatre, dance and performance scene. It provides professional local dance and theatre groups with working conditions and focuses on supporting emerging artists. Programmes for young audiences are available from age eight; the programme changes. Check the specific performances and dates before you go.

Plan a visit to the market

The Birsfelden farmers’ market takes place on the first Saturday of each month from 09:00 to 12:00 at Zentrumsplatz. If you would like to visit the market, check the date before travelling. Together with the changing exhibitions and ROXY’s programme, it offers another specific reason to plan your visit around current dates.
