Reute – Hiking in an Open Hilly Landscape
Accommodation in Reute
Reute lies above the Rhine Valley in an open hilly landscape with views of the Rhine Valley and Lake Constance. The municipality combines an agricultural setting with a quiet local character. Walking and hiking trails lead through the hilly landscape in Reute and its surroundings; Reute is also part of the bike route network. For your trip planning, you can choose from routes through the hills, hikes with Reute as a destination or starting point, and historic details in the village.
Hiking in Reute and Mohren
The municipality has a well-developed network of hiking trails. The trails are very well signposted and include routes for different ability levels. One specific option is the easy circular trail in Mohren, which is also suitable for outings with children. It starts either at the Bellevue postbus stop or at the Sonnenschein nursing home in Mohren. Signposting, trail conditions, and information about stops or facilities may change; check the latest information before setting off.
Two hikes with different routes
The hike “Through the Hilly Appenzell Vorderland” reaches the village of Reute after descending to Eschenmoos and crossing the Fallbach stream. Another tour, “Field, Forest and Meadow Trails in the Border Area,” leads from Reute down to Berneck and back via Steingocht. The two trails place Reute differently within their routes: on the first hike, the village is the destination after the section through Eschenmoos and across the Fallbach; on the second, the route from Reute begins in the direction of Berneck before returning via Steingocht. For this hike, postbuses run from Heiden or Heerbrugg to Reute, Dorf stop. Check the timetable before departure.
Meadows, forests, and regional products
On the “Field, Forest and Meadow Trails in the Border Area” route, the trail crosses meadows and field paths and passes through forests with rushing streams in the ravines. Open areas and wooded sections alternate, and the scenery may vary depending on the season. In the area covered by this hike, apples and pears are used to make Appenzeller Bschorle, while grapes are used to make Rheintaler wine. These regional products complement the views of the agricultural landscape through which the route passes.
History and church
Documentary references to the area of Reute date back to the 14th century. At that time, it was shaped primarily by agriculture and scattered settlements. Traditional scattered settlements and chapels bring the region’s history to life in Reute and its surroundings.
Reute Church also has historic features: its painted, five-sided panel ceiling was created in 1706 and depicts a blue starry sky. The current organ dates from 1954 and has 16 sounding stops. The pulpit was made by local craftsmen Johannes Rohner and Ulrich Bänziger. If you would like to see the interior features in person, check access to the church in advance; its condition and accessibility may change.
