Schwellbrunn combines puzzle trails, a scenic ridge route and a rich cultural history. This gives you a choice of different focuses when planning your trip: a circular trail with puzzle stations, a four-hour route along the ridge, or paths that offer insights into the village’s history and evidence of early industrialisation. You can plan your stay around what matters most to you: puzzles, a longer hike or historical insights.

Puzzle trails in two versions

The “Hüpfis Rätselweg” circular trail starts and ends in Schwellbrunn. It crosses pastureland and passes through forests, with eight puzzle stations along the way. The route takes you through a variety of landscapes, while the puzzles provide another focus for the walk.

There are two versions of the puzzle trails in Schwellbrunn: “Stüpfis Rätselweg” is marked in green and is shorter, while “Hüpfis Rätselweg” is marked in blue and is almost twice as long. These differences can help you choose between the two routes. Puzzle content, signage and route details may change, so check the latest information before setting out.

Ridge route along the crest

The Landscheidi Trail offers a different hiking option. The 8 km route takes four hours and leads from Schwellbrunn, Halden, via Landscheidi, Sägenbach and Rötschwil, before returning to Schwellbrunn. It follows a ridge with views of the Appenzell hills, the Alpstein with the Säntis, and Lake Constance.

The route also passes the Risiwaldhöhe, Schwellbrunn’s highest point at 1,100 metres. The stated four-hour duration provides a specific time frame for the walk. Seasonal conditions may affect access, so check current trail conditions before setting out.

Cultural trails and village history

The Schwellbrunn Cultural Trail offers insights into the village’s rich cultural history. The Kulturspur trail sections provide another perspective: the section from Urnäsch to Schwellbrunn ends in the village centre, where there is a public transport bus connection. Check the current timetable when planning your journey. The section from Schwellbrunn to Herisau passes through an unspoilt hilly landscape with traditional farming structures and leads to the Wissbach Gorge, where evidence of early industrialisation can be seen.

Church and village character

The Evangelical Church of Schwellbrunn was consecrated in 1648 as the village’s first church. The construction of the church marked the beginning of the development of the characteristic ridge-top street village, which continued into the 19th century. Since then, its appearance has remained essentially unchanged; the village is of national significance. The church, ridge-top location and village form that developed over an extended period give the local history an architectural dimension.

Textile history

Textile work is also part of the village’s history: linen production, cotton weaving, and spinning and winding thread at home shaped Schwellbrunn’s textile history. These activities ranged from production and weaving to work carried out in the home. Together with the farming structures along the Kulturspur trail, they reveal different facets of local history, complementing the landscapes along the routes.
