Oberegg: Hiking, Themed Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Oberegg
Oberegg can be planned as a starting point and destination for extensive hikes through the hills. Many hiking trails pass through hamlets and by farms on their way up to the Landmark. The surrounding hills offer views towards Lake Constance. When choosing a hotel, it is worth first considering which trails you would like to include in your stay: a loop with a set time frame, a themed trail in the village or a longer stage through the surrounding area. The routes differ not only in duration, but also in whether they lead back to Oberegg or end elsewhere.
Circular Routes and Stages
The «Rundum Oberegg» circular hike is 7.9 kilometres long, rated moderate and listed as taking 2 hours and 25 minutes. It starts and ends at the Oberegg, Post bus stop. Along the way, it climbs from Oberegg to St. Anton and returns through a landscape shaped by ravines and hills. The route offers far-reaching views of mountains, river and lake, combining a clearly stated distance with a variety of landscapes.
One stage with a different endpoint is «Walzenhausen–Kaien»: it crosses the border into the district of Oberegg and passes through the village. The stage ends at Kaien, where hikers can board the postbus. The two routes therefore also differ in their orientation: «Rundum Oberegg» returns to its starting point, while the stage ends at Kaien. Check the timetable for current bus connections.
Themed Trail and Shorter Hiking Ideas
The Gschichtliweg starts at Bärenpärkli, passes through the village and has ten stops. At each stop, you can scan a QR code to hear part of a story read aloud. The stories and fairy tales are updated four times a year. Walking time alone is listed as 40 minutes; allow around 70 to 80 minutes depending on your group if you plan to stop and read. The distinction between walking time and the full circuit is particularly useful here: those who take their time listening at the stops will need longer than the walking time alone.
The hiking suggestion «Sepp’s Hiking Suggestion» starts in Oberegg, goes via Lachen in Walzenhausen and returns to Oberegg. The Chindlistein lies along the route; information boards provide interesting facts about these unusual stones. In summer, there is a fire pit at the Klusbach where you can grill, as well as the opportunity to cool off in the stream. This suggestion combines the route with individual stops, offering a different kind of outing from a loop with a specified duration.
More Activities and Views
In addition to the hiking trails, Oberegg has various mountain biking routes catering to different levels. For winter sports, there is a ski lift and a network of cross-country ski trails. Another hiking option is the circular route «Through Two Cantons and Three Municipalities» from Wald to St. Anton. Buses run from St. Anton towards Heiden or Trogen, with connections to the rail network; check current connections separately. This gives you a choice of routes that start and finish in Oberegg as well as trails with different stage endpoints.
From Kafi Anton, the view extends across the Rhine Valley, the Alpstein, the mountains of Austria and Liechtenstein, and Lake Constance. How far you can see depends on the weather. There is also a small fire brigade museum on St. Anton near Oberegg.
Church History in Oberegg
The local church history encompasses several events that took place at different times. In 1654, construction began in the hamlet of Oberrickenbach on a parish church for the Catholic residents of Oberegg-Hirschberg. The church was consecrated in 1658, and the parish was established that same year. The parish includes St. Anton Chapel, built in the early 18th century. Oberegg’s church was destroyed by a devastating fire on 16 April 1817; the present church was consecrated in 1872. Its west-facing main façade is compared to churches in northern Italy. These historical milestones add a distinct perspective on the development of the village to its trails and viewpoints.
