Discover Kvänum: routes, history and food and drink
Accommodation in Kvänum
Kvänum offers more than one reason to visit. Highlights include outdoor routes, local history, tastings, and cultural and culinary experiences. The specific activities vary in type and length—a useful starting point when planning your stay around your personal interests.
Local history and development
Kvänum developed from the late 19th century onward around the railway station and alongside the older church village. These two landmarks provide a contrast in the town’s history: the church village points to the older settlement, while later development took place around the railway station. This offers a way to understand Kvänum not only through its leisure activities but also through its development.
Outdoor routes and nature
The Oltorp outdoor area in Kvänum offers four scenic and challenging mountain biking routes for adults and children. There is also a ten-kilometre cultural walking trail that can be enjoyed on foot, while running or by bicycle. The activities have different focuses: the four routes are for mountain biking, while the cultural trail can be used in several ways. The different distances are also important when planning: the ten-kilometre figure applies to the cultural walking trail, not the mountain biking routes. Oltorp also has a small swimming lake, adding another point of interest to the outdoor activities.
Near Kvänum, outside the town, lies Bastöna gammelgård in Norra Vånga. This well-preserved historic farm dates back to the 1860s. From Bastöna, a marked hiking trail runs across Rösjö Mosse and past Lake Rösjön before returning to the starting point; it is about five kilometres long. By comparison, Oltorp’s cultural walking trail is ten kilometres long. The Bastöna route crosses the bog and passes the lake before returning to the start. The distance and route give you two specific points of comparison when choosing a trail.
Tastings, gardens and golf
Qvänum Mat & Malt offers drink tastings and tours of the brewery and distillery. Aromatic beer is made there without additives, using water from its own well. Tastings and tours offer different experiences: tastings focus on the drinks, while a tour takes you through the brewery or distillery. This makes it easier to choose whether you would rather sample drinks or learn more about where they are produced.
At Bjertorp Slott, visitors can stroll through the castle garden and experience the historic surroundings. Bjertorp Slott also has a golf course that readers of Golf Digest magazine voted the best golf course in Västra Götaland. The restaurant at Bjertorp Slott uses ingredients from local suppliers. The garden and historic surroundings, golf, and regional ingredients offer different reasons to visit.
Find a hotel to suit your reason for travelling
If you mainly want to make time for outdoor activities, Oltorp’s routes and the marked trail at Bastöna offer different options. If you are more interested in history, golf or food and drink, the town’s development, the castle garden and the tastings could be your focus.
