Ljungskile: Paths by the Water and Cultural History
Accommodation in Ljungskile
If you are considering Ljungskile as a travel destination, you can plan your days here around different interests: short walks by the water, longer hikes, or a focus on cultural history. The routes described differ in length and trail conditions; the places along the shore and the historical sites add further highlights to your stay.
Hiking between Ljungskileviken and Bredfjället
The Salt till sött circular trail is about 6 kilometers long and leads from the shore of Ljungskileviken to the small lake Skarsjön. The easiest place to start the loop is Ljungskile main station; another starting point is Ljungskile Folkhögskola. Trail conditions, markings, and starting-point information may change. Check them before setting out, especially if you plan your day around a particular starting point.
Märtalederna consists of two circular routes: one is 4.3 kilometers long, the other 6.5 kilometers. This gives you a clear choice between two distances. Skarsjöleden differs in its terrain: the circular trail runs east of Ljungskile around Stora Skarsjön on Bredfjället. It is hilly, with steep sections on forest paths, over rocks, and on gravel. If trail conditions are important to your plans, this description offers a useful comparison with the information about the length of Märtalederna.
At Norra Fjället, there is a 2.5-kilometer illuminated trail for hiking and running; in winter, it is used for skiing. The hiking trails and ski trails there are open to everyone. However, whether they can be used in winter depends on conditions. Norra Fjället therefore offers a shorter illuminated trail and seasonal skiing opportunities, while other routes have their own lengths or more detailed descriptions of trail conditions.
Silverfallet is a 15-meter-high waterfall in Ljungskile. The nearest parking area is about 700 meters past the Skarsjövallen sports field; from there, it is approximately 1 kilometer on foot. Take this distance into account when planning, and check local conditions before setting out. The distance describes the route, not how long it takes to walk.
Shoreline, swimming area, and playground
For a short walk by the water, Strandpromenaden Ljungskile is an easy path and is also suitable for families with children. Kungsparken is a swimming area in Ljungskile. Badhusparken includes the themed playground “Småkrypens värld.” These places offer different ways to spend time outdoors: a walk by the water, a swimming area, or a playground with its own theme.
Ljungskile Kajakcenter is located at the marina in Ljungskileviken. Its location at the harbor adds another way to enjoy the water alongside the shoreline and swimming areas. Check current offerings and local conditions before visiting.
Cultural history in churches and the landscape
Ljungskile has two churches with different historical time periods. Ljungs gamla kyrka was probably built in the 12th century or the beginning of the 13th century. Ljungs kyrka, by contrast, was built in 1901–1902 in the Neo-Gothic style typical of the period. The tentative dating of the old church is important: its construction is assigned to a probable period, while specific construction years are given for Ljungs kyrka.
Lyckorna also tells the story of the area: landowner Robert MacFie founded the historic seaside resort in 1877. The Musselbaren is located in Lyckorna’s old clock tower, where fresh blue mussels are served with classic sides. The place thus combines a historic seaside resort with a present-day dining destination.
Bredfjället is a 10-square-kilometer wilderness and cultural landscape of forests, marshes, streams, and around 30 lakes. Numerous cultural and historical remains have been preserved there, telling of a hard life and poverty. Those exploring Bredfjället will encounter not only a landscape with a variety of natural features, but also traces of its cultural history. The circular trail around Stora Skarsjön also runs on Bredfjället, linking a specific hiking route with this landscape.
An event in October
Every year in October, Ljungskile Friluftsklubb hosts Bohuslän’s largest orienteering competition. If you are planning a trip for this time of year, check the specific event dates. This lets you take the event into account when planning your trip without assuming a particular date.
