Discover Tidaholm: Industrial heritage and hotels
Accommodation in Tidaholm
The Tidan River flows through Tidaholm. In the town centre, you’ll find Tidaholm Museum on Vulcan Island and the Turbinhusön cultural landscape along the riverbank. If you’re planning a stay, you can choose between exploring the town’s industrial history and taking walks by the water.
Industrial history on Vulcan Island
Tidaholm Museum is right in the town centre on Vulcan Island. Its permanent exhibition explains how industrialisation, work and working people shaped Tidaholm. It pays particular attention to the everyday working lives of women and children. In the former Vulcan factory buildings, the museum also tells the story of Tidaholm as an industrial town.
Another chapter in this industrial history is Vulcan’s old forge. Built in 1871, it was a central part of the Vulcan match factory. The museum’s C-Magasin now displays nine surviving vehicles from the Tidaholms bruk collection. Together, the forge and vehicle collection offer different insights into the town’s industrial past.
Blacksmithing courses are also offered in Tidaholm in collaboration with Studieförbundet Vuxenskolan. Those interested in the craft can explore another aspect of the blacksmithing tradition, in addition to the historical exhibits.
Cultural sites by the Tidan
Turbinhusön is right in the town centre of Tidaholm, on the bank of the Tidan. Its well-preserved cultural landscape includes a long riverside promenade, ideal for a walk. The Stadsvandring i Tidaholm walking tour also connects the two islands: starting on Vulcan Island, it follows the Tidan to Turbinhusön, then passes several historic sites in the town centre on the way back. Signs along the route provide information about places of cultural and historical interest.
On Turbinhusön, Museistugan is a simple dwelling with furnished living environments from around the turn of the 19th century. One section shows a poor home, the other a more prosperous one. During the summer season, Tidaholm Art Gallery holds art exhibitions in Turbinhuset. This seasonal exhibition tradition complements the insights into domestic and industrial history with art.
Walks and time outdoors
Bruksvilleparken offers opportunities to enjoy a coffee and take a walk by the Tidan River. The park has a barbecue area with tables and seating, as well as an outdoor stage that hosts entertainment in summer. It offers both a place to take a break and activities to enjoy outdoors.
Ånastigen is a popular walking trail along the Tidan, south of Stallängsskogen. Hellidsberget has well-maintained exercise trails measuring 1, 2.5, 3.3, 5 and 10 kilometres. The easy 10-kilometre loop starts at Spårcentralen near SISU-stugan. Check the route details again before planning your route.
Hellidens slott park is also a pleasant place for a walk and includes duck ponds. Those interested in the surrounding landscape can visit Hyltan Nature Reserve, about 12 kilometres east of Tidaholm. Ridges, hills and kettle holes shape its varied terrain.
