Tostared lies on the northwestern side of the slope descending toward Lake Lygnern, in the heights above the lake. The landscape, church history, and local crafts give the area different facets. Sjögärde adds woodland, small streams, and a path to the shore of Lygnern. For your trip planning, you can therefore focus on specific themes: the church’s historical features, organ building, or nature destinations around Tostared.

Lygnern and the Sjögärde Landscape

A path through Sjögärde leads to the shore of Lygnern. There is a small sandy beach there. Small streams run through the beech forest of Sjögärde; the Sjögärde biotope protection area is also near Tostared, on the border with Halland. The lakeshore, forest, and protected area are different aspects of the same landscape: the path provides a direct connection to the shore, while the streams and beech forest describe the character of the woodland.

The Bokskogen bathing area is another distinct landmark: it is on Tostaredvägen, in the direction of the sea. There are also many opportunities for paddling in the area around Tostared and Lake Lygnern. Several ways of enjoying the water are available: the named bathing area, the path to the shore of Lygnern with its small sandy beach, and the broader paddling opportunities in the area. Check the bathing area’s current facilities on site.

Church and Crafts: Markers from Different Periods

The Tostared Church can be explored through several distinct historical details. Its soapstone baptismal font dates from 1250 and belongs to the “Starrkärr fonts” group. The church’s oak timber was felled in 1540. The current tower was built in 1824. These dates refer to different elements: the font, timber, and tower span different periods in the church’s history rather than indicating a single construction date.

The organ-building factory in Tostared is part of the area’s local crafts. Since the 1930s, it has built and renovated more than 200 organs in various locations across Sweden. This history complements the church’s historical markers with a different theme: the work of building or restoring organs in locations across the country.

Gallery, Crafts, and Café

Eskekärr Galleri & Hantverksbutik is located at Eskekärr Säteri in Tostared, near Lake Lygnern. Café Magasinet is also part of Eskekärr Säteri and was formerly a granary. During the summer months, it serves as a café, gallery, and crafts shop. This seasonal opening is important when planning a visit; check opening hours and dates before you travel.

Another possible stop is Långehult damm, which is associated with a barbecue area on private property. Since the barbecue area is on private property, check the access conditions on site before visiting. This takes the private location into account when planning without assuming that access is unrestricted.
