Lilla Edet
Accommodation in Lilla Edet
Lilla Edet offers several specific points of interest to help you choose a destination for your stay: the history of the locks, historic buildings, and trails in the surrounding area. This gives you a way to explore the town based on your own plans.
The Lock and the Town’s History
Lilla Edet’s first lock was completed in 1607, and the original lock is still preserved. At Ströms sluss, recreational boats and canal vessels are raised and lowered on the Göta älv. The change in water level there is six metres. The lock thus highlights both an early date in the town’s history and a specific technical feature.
Fuxerna kyrka is also one of the town’s historic buildings. The present church was built in 1769. The Ollonbergska gravkoret is preserved in its cemetery and is now used as a funeral chapel. Storgatan runs from the banks of the Göta älv through all of Lilla Edet and was a busy shopping street in the early 20th century.
The houses known as Fridhemshusen are preserved on Storgatan. They were built for people who were severely affected by the 1888 fire and lost their homes. The fire destroyed large parts of Lilla Edet. Fridhemsstugan is one of two workers’ houses that survived the fire. To arrange a visit to Fridhemsstugan, call Ann-Britt Johansson at 076-017 24 32.
The town’s industrial history also stretches back a long way: Lilla Edet had a large sawmill industry for at least three centuries, which was later transformed into a paper industry. Edet pappersbruk has a history dating back to the 1880s. This development adds another focus to the town’s history of locks and buildings.
Trails and Outdoor Activities
Prässebergsleden is 2.9 kilometres long and offers viewpoints over the Göta Älv valley. Götaleden runs along the higher mountain areas east of Lilla Edet and is about five kilometres long. The different lengths make it easier to compare the routes based on how far you plan to walk. Pilgrimsleden Göta älv also passes through Lilla Edet.
Högstorp has illuminated circular trails measuring 2,200 and 1,000 metres. The lighting is seasonal. In Ströms slottspark, near the Göta älv and adjacent to Lilla Edet vänthamn, you’ll find a varied short disc golf course and two outdoor fitness areas. The park also has the “Bollkul” and “Puls och styrka” activity circuits.
Lilla Edet and Ström have an extensive network of cycle paths. You can ride on a cycle path between Lödöse Södra station and Lilla Edet; a 1.3-kilometre section follows a minor road. If you plan to use this connection, check the current route conditions.
Culture and Practical Information
Kulturhuset Eden hosts cultural events in central Lilla Edet. Tickets can be purchased at the entrance. The building also houses a library, a cultural school, and a cinema run by Folkets Hus. Lilla Edet Bryggeri offers beer tastings where you can learn about the brewing process and sample beers.
Västtrafik’s on-demand local transport is also relevant when planning your journeys: it serves the bus station and the centre of Lilla Edet. Check the provider’s latest information before travelling. North of the lock is an unstaffed waiting harbour where boats can moor around the clock. Check its condition before setting out.
Whether you’re more interested in the history of the locks, the preserved buildings, or a particular route, the named sites and trails give you different ways to plan your stay in Lilla Edet.
