Nossebro: Market, Culture and Routes along the Nossan
Accommodation in Nossebro
If you’re looking for a hotel in Nossebro, the town offers several distinct focal points: a recurring market day, local cultural history, trails through mixed woodland and activities on the Nossan. The best time to visit therefore depends on whether you want to focus on the market, historical themes or time outdoors. The places and activities below offer concrete ideas to help you plan.
Market Day and Cultural History
Nossebro Marknad takes place from March to November, on the last Wednesday of each month. The stalls offer locally produced and organic products, including honey, juice and jam. The selection may vary from one market day to another. This lets you plan your stay around a specific date without assuming that the same products will be available at every market.
The Cultural Walk in Nossebro opened in April 2009 and was updated in 2019 for its tenth anniversary. Signs at buildings, artworks and other locations provide information, stories and images from different historical periods. The walk thus connects a more recent chapter in the town’s history with themes from earlier times.
At Kerstinsås kvarn, milling history and art also come together. After being restored, the mill resumed grinding grain in 2007. The artwork “Blommande Nossan” by Tony Abrahamsson (1954) is in the water just downstream from the mill. Stallaholm in Nossebro was once both the name of a village and a large farm; in the 17th century, the farm belonged to the noble Papegoja family. This local history offers a different way to explore the past from the explanatory signs along the Cultural Walk.
The collections of former postmaster Åke Bergmer, covering the VGJ and other narrow-gauge railways in Västergötland, are located on the upper floor of the Stationshuset. Temporary exhibitions are held in the former waiting room of the Stationshuset. The collections and changing exhibitions have different focuses: one explores railway history, while the other features temporary exhibition themes.
Trails and Landscape
For a stay that includes outdoor activity, consider the Cultural Walk, the Lödöse–Skara Pilgrim Trail and the trails at Högaberget. One section of the pilgrim trail passes through Nossebro and follows a medieval pilgrimage route. While the Cultural Walk uses signs to introduce different historical periods, the defining historical connection of the pilgrim trail is the route of a medieval pilgrimage.
At Högaberget, exercise trails and illuminated trails run through mixed woodland; the elevation difference is about 15 metres. This figure describes the elevation difference, not the length of the trails or the time it takes to walk them. If you want to plan based on the specific characteristics of the trails, you’ll find different information here than for the historical routes. There is also a barbecue area at Högaberget, on the other side of the suspension bridge by the large oak tree.
The Nossan and Swimming Facilities
Near Nossebro, the Nossan is considered a natural waterway for canoeing or kayaking. Canoes can be rented for paddling on the Nossan at Nossebro bad & camping; check current availability before travelling. This brings two separate planning considerations into focus: choosing an activity on the river and checking whether rentals are available for your travel dates.
Nossebro bad & camping also has a 25-metre heated outdoor pool with a water slide and an adjacent children’s pool. Seasonal opening times may vary; check in advance whether the outdoor pool will be open during your stay. The indoor pool is 12.5 metres long and has an adjustable floor. The two pools can therefore be distinguished by their features: the outdoor pool has a slide and children’s pool, while the indoor pool has an adjustable floor.
An Amenity in the Centre
Essunga Library is located in the centre of Nossebro. It offers books, newspapers, computers, learning opportunities and cultural activities. It adds a central amenity to the town’s offerings of markets, trails and local history. The visitor programme may change; if you’re visiting for a specific cultural activity, check the current programme in advance.
