Älvängen: Rope-Making History, Cycling Tours and Hotels
Accommodation in Älvängen
Älvängen offers a range of ways to make the most of your stay: the history of rope-making, cycling tours of varying lengths, and trails with historical themes.
Rope-Making and Cultural History
In 1916, Carlmarks repslageri moved its operations from Åmål to Älvängen. The rope-making works are a protected historic building. The Repslagarmuseet presents the history of rope-making and Carlmarks’ 200-year heritage—from craftsmanship to industry. In Älvängen, you can discover both the history of a business and the development of a craft.
Whenever the museum is open, rope is always being made; other crafts are occasionally demonstrated too. The Repslagarmuseet is accessible to wheelchair users, people using walkers, and visitors with strollers, except for the temporary exhibition room. Another landmark in the local cultural history is the oldest surviving Folkets Hus in Ale Municipality, located in Älvängen.
Cycling Tours by Distance and Theme
Three cycling tours make it easy to compare distances: Älvängen–Paradiset is 5 km long, Älvängen–Kilanda is 11 km, and Älvängen–Utby–Torp–Hältorp is 13 km. The Paradiset tour is family-friendly for children and offers views across Älvdalen. It combines the shortest of the three routes with a specifically mentioned viewpoint.
The 11 km Älvängen–Kilanda tour is a longer family ride. It passes over the heights of Älvängen on its way to Starrkärr. The 13 km route via Utby, Torp, and Hältorp is also described as a family tour. You can compare the distances and features listed for each route: views across Älvdalen on the Paradiset tour, the heights on the Kilanda tour, and the longer route via the places named in the route to Hältorp.
Hiking Trails, Historic Traces, and Views
Along the Rannebergsstigen, signs provide information about the Viking Age, a hillfort, prehistoric farmland, and prehistoric settlements in the surrounding area. These themes span different periods of history, from early settlements and agricultural use to traces of the Viking Age. Ranneberget offers a different focus. The hill is a landmark of Älvängen, and its summit provides impressive views in every direction.
A hike along the Pilgrimsleden Göta älv runs from Bohus station to Älvängen station. In the wider region, the Pilgrimsleden runs from Gothenburg to Vänersborg. The described hike between the stations and the trail’s route through the wider region offer two different points of reference for planning. Historical information signs, a viewpoint, and a hike between railway stations each offer a different focus.
Getting Here and Things to Do
Älvängen is served by the Ale commuter train and regional trains. If you plan to arrive by train, check the timetable for your travel date. This lets you plan your journey based on the actual services.
There is also a local place to go for activities beyond cycling and hiking: the activity playground in Älvängen has a basketball court and a multi-purpose arena with artificial turf for ball sports. The local options therefore range from longer cycling tours and historic hiking trails to specifically named sports facilities.
