Västerås offers a range of options for a stay: historic sites, cultural attractions, waterside routes and excursions on Lake Mälaren. If you’re looking for a hotel, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip. History, an event date or time outdoors may shape your plans.

History and culture in Västerås

Vallby Open-Air Museum showcases the living and working environments of people from the 17th to the late 20th century. The museum comprises around 50 preserved buildings that were moved there from across Västmanland. This broad time span gives a visit to the museum a wide historical context: you’ll encounter more than just one period of the past. Swedish landrace breeds are also kept on the grounds, including Jämtland goats, Gestrike sheep and Swedish Mountain Cattle.

Another trace of history leads to Västerås Cathedral. Västerås has had a cathedral since around 1100; at the time, the city was called Västra Aros. The tomb of King Erik XIV is inside the cathedral. Its treasury displays church treasures from Västerås and the churches of the diocese. The city’s early history, a royal tomb associated with a named king and ecclesiastical collection pieces are thus clearly connected, although these places offer different kinds of insight.

The building housing Kokpunkten also has a place in history: the old power station was listed as a historic building in 1999. It complements the older traces at the cathedral and open-air museum with an example of more recent industrial history.

Events, theatre and music

The Västerås City Festival has been held every year from Thursday to Saturday in calendar week 26 since 2009—that is, the week after Midsummer. Västerås Cultural Night takes place on a Saturday in late September in the city centre. As the exact dates may vary from year to year, check the dates for the year you plan to travel.

Västmanlands Theatre presents around 250 performances a year, about half of which are aimed at children and young people. The musical programme at Västerås Concert Hall ranges from folk and world music to pop/rock, songs, schlager and jazz, as well as chamber music and symphony concerts. These details describe different cultural offerings: recurring events in the city centre, a theatre programme and a wide range of musical genres.

Routes and landscapes

Mälarpromenaden is a four-kilometre marked walking and cycling route along the water between Lögastrand and Lasse Färnlöfs plats. Bruksleden is on a different scale: this 250-kilometre long-distance trail passes through Västmanland’s historic industrial sites and connects to Bergslagsleden in southern Dalarna. There are three access points to Bruksleden near Västerås, at Erikslund, Rocklunda and Skultuna. The options range from a short waterside route to a long-distance trail through historic industrial sites.

For audio tours, the free Västeråsguide app offers routes through Kopparlunden, Djäkneberget and Öster Mälarstrand. It can be downloaded from the App Store and Google Play. Björnön Nature Reserve promotes outdoor recreation in a scenic landscape, making it another option to consider when planning time outdoors.

Excursions on Lake Mälaren and seasonal offerings

RIB tours, day trips and evening cruises on Lake Mälaren are offered from Västerås; providers and timetables may vary by season. Elbafärjan is Västerås’ hop-on, hop-off boat, with a one-hour circular trip. Its route and timetable may also vary by season. If a boat trip is part of your plans, check the latest timetable in advance.

There are two unmanned kayak stations in Västerås: one at Notuddskajen and one at First Camp Mälaren in Johannisberg. As locations may change, it’s a good idea to verify them before planning your trip. Bondens egen Marknad at Bondtorget is also seasonal. Many producers from the surrounding area sell their goods directly to customers there; dates vary from year to year.

Västerås offers everything from specific historic sites and cultural events to marked routes, longer hiking trails and waterside activities. Tailor your hotel search to the options that matter most for your stay, and consider whether a particular event date will determine your travel dates.
