Accommodation in Karmansbo
The ironworks and its history
The Karmansbo ironworks setting is remarkable as an ensemble: it is the only ironworks in the municipality where all parts of the works setting have been preserved. These include the manor house, barn, workers’ housing, forge with rolling mill, and works office. The Karmansbo industrial heritage site also includes, among other things, the forge and its associated water channel. Karmansbo bruk was designated a listed building on 13 February 2013. The preserved buildings make the works setting understandable as an interplay of several elements, rather than just a single industrial building.
After extensive restoration work, the forge still operates today just as it did when the works were in operation. Restoration work on the rolling mill began in autumn 2023; it resumed operation in September 2024. Visitor access may be seasonal. At other times of year, the Karmansbo industrial heritage site also offers private guided tours by prior contact and booking.
Events and digital interpretation
Järnets dag takes place every year on the first Saturday in July. If you would like to plan your stay around the event, check that year’s program before you travel. This lets you schedule your visit without confusing the annual date with the program for a particular year.
Visitors can use the augmented reality app Hubbla at specific GPS locations. The app provides access to six new so-called Hubblor, which tell the story of the work of the artist-in-residence project. This digital offering adds project-related stories to the experience of the site; the Hubblor are available through the same app.
Walking through the works setting and nature reserve
The Karmansboslingan is just over five kilometres long and starts at the car park for the Karmansbo industrial heritage site. Orange markers lead past the workers’ housing. The loop enters the Hedströmmen Nature Reserve; there, the trail follows the shoreline through mossy forests and past views of the water. The route also follows the old KURJ railway line and returns to the Karmansbo industrial heritage site. The loop thus connects preserved traces of the works setting with a route along the river and through the forest. Observe the protected area’s rules. Parking information and trail markings may change; trail conditions can also vary after rain or with seasonal changes. Check the latest information before setting out.
Nearby, a trail in the Holmen Nature Reserve leads from Karmansbo bruk to a rest area on the banks of the Hedströmmen, level with Tegelbacken. The nature reserve also offers a close-up view of two rushing rapids on the Hedströmmen. Check access and trail conditions in advance, and observe the reserve’s rules.
Cycling and canoe trips
The 74-kilometre LĂĄnga asfaltsturen cycling route passes through Karmansbo. Between Karmansbo and Uttersberg, the road runs along the crest of a narrow esker. The Karmansboslingan and the cycling route differ considerably in length: just over five kilometres on foot compared with 74 kilometres by bike. Check current route conditions before cycling.
The Hedströmmen mellersta canoe route runs from Baggå via Skinnskatteberg to Karmansbo. From there, it continues towards Bernshammar and the lower Hedströmmen; this further section includes a four-kilometre portage. The places mentioned and the length of the portage help you understand the course of the canoe route.
