Broddbo between railway heritage and landscape
Accommodation in Broddbo
Broddbo lies in a landscape shaped by a rising ridge, forest and surrounding farmland. At the same time, the village tells the story of the development of a small station settlement: Broddbo is one of the few small, well-preserved settlements of this kind along the Sala–Krylbo railway line. This blend of rural surroundings and railway history gives the village a distinct character.
Landscape and railway heritage
The Sala–Krylbo line of the Norra Stambanan was inaugurated in 1873 and contributed to the development of the station settlement. This connection is key to understanding Broddbo as a railway village: it explains why the station building, Werner’s General Store and the chapel are linked to railway construction in the village’s history.
Buildings and local history
Broddbo’s former station building has been preserved and is now used as a residence and workshop. Its current use thus differs from its former function as a railway station. In the village’s history, it marks the transition from a station to a building used for other purposes.
Werner’s General Store was built at the end of the 19th century. Its establishment was connected with railway construction and Broddbo’s growth. The general store was always a very important meeting place for the community; it closed in 2009. The opening of the line in 1873 and the construction of the general store towards the end of the century mark different stages in this development.
Broddbo Chapel was built in the 1890s and belonged to the Mission Church. It is considered culturally and historically valuable, both as a chapel and as a period building. It is also seen as part of Broddbo’s development around the turn of the 20th century in connection with railway construction. The chapel was built after the opening of the line, inaugurated in 1873.
Broddbo skogsväg (Broddbo Forest Road) is also part of the village’s history. It is said to have been built during the time of Gustav Vasa, when the area belonged to the Väsby estate. The road was made passable across the flooded marshland so that grain, firewood and charcoal from northern areas could be delivered to Sala on time.
Exercise and outdoor activities
The municipal exercise trail is 2.2 km long and runs through varied terrain. In winter, it is prepared for walking. There is a wind shelter next to the trail. This makes it easy to distinguish the winter option from a historical tour of the village: the focus here is on exercising in the terrain and going for a walk.
The playground in Broddbo has a small-animal theme and features, among other things, a slide, climbing frame and barbecue grill. Several slopes make it possible to go sledding in winter. This offers two different winter activities: walks on the prepared exercise trail and sledding on the playground slopes.
