Discover Köping: cultural history, museums and trails
Accommodation in Köping
Cultural history, technology and outdoor trails give a stay in Köping a range of different focuses. The Museistråket leads to historic objects and buildings connected with the town; several museums explore individual chapters of its history. If you prefer to spend time outdoors, you’ll find longer hiking trails and mountain biking routes with designated difficulty levels. This lets you plan your trip around the topics that interest you most in Köping.
History and craftsmanship in Köping
Explore the Museistråket at your own pace or join a guided tour through history. Nyströmska gården adds the story of a carpenter’s farmstead: the property dates back to the 17th century and was used as a carpenter’s farmstead for three generations from 1870 onwards. It is the last surviving Ågård in Köping. Almost all the fittings in the carpentry workshop have been preserved, and the machines and tools can still be used.
At the Gammelgården open-air museum, the focus is on building traditions, historic crafts and some of Köping’s early trades. The museum consists of seven buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries, including a farmhouse, a forge, a ropewalk and a tannery. The collections also offer a glimpse into a rural household, with vessels used to prepare food, textile crafts and agricultural equipment. Here, you can encounter both the buildings and objects from everyday life and work.
Technology and local history
Köping’s fire museum shows the history of fire protection in the town through a variety of equipment and vehicles. Exhibits include firefighting equipment from the 18th century, an electric fire engine from 1901 and a fire engine from 1932. These dated examples bring different stages of this history to life, while the exhibition covers more than just one type of equipment.
The KUJ railway museum features the steam locomotive Patric Reuterswärd, two passenger carriages and a railway trolley. The car and technology museum offers a different technical focus: it includes a historic car workshop from the 1920s and an exhibition on the importance of Köping to Volvo during the company’s founding years. Köping Museum, meanwhile, has permanent exhibitions about events and people from the history of Köping Municipality.
Köping Church is also part of the town’s history. King Charles XI commissioned architect Nicodemus Tessin the Younger to build the present church; it was inaugurated in 1706. Köping’s historical attractions thus range from town and municipal history to fire protection, railways, workshops and business history.
Hiking, mountain biking and outdoor trails
Three longer hiking trails pass through Köping. The 20-kilometre hiking trail between Köping and Arboga gives you a specific distance to use when planning your trip. The mountain biking routes, by contrast, can be easily compared by length and designated difficulty level: Köping has three purpose-built routes, including Karlbergsspåret, at 5,315 metres and rated easy to moderate, and Johannisdalsspåret, at 3,000 metres. Johannisdalsspåret is rated easy and has no technical sections.
Skoftestaspåret is rated intermediate to difficult. The purpose-built trails include several drops, velodromes and some challenging technical sections. The routes therefore differ in both length and demands: Johannisdalsspåret is the easy option with no technical sections, while Skoftestaspåret is rated as more challenging. A signposted cycle path makes it easier to move between the mountain biking routes.
Agda Östlund Park has four entrances and illuminated walking and cycling paths. A nature trail encourages play, exercise and discovering nature. Alongside longer hikes and mountain biking routes of varying difficulty, the park offers more paths and nature experiences to choose from. Which of these options shapes your stay depends on whether you’d rather spend your time exploring historical collections, the history of technology or outdoor activities.
