The Arbogaån flows through Arboga’s city center. The Hjälmare Canal runs through a historic cultural landscape between Lakes Hjälmaren and Mälaren and crosses the river. Its distinctive infrastructure includes nine manually operated locks. As Sweden’s oldest navigable canal, it connects history with a landscape close to nature. In summer, passenger boats offer regular sightseeing trips; check the timetable before your trip.

Forest Trails and Shoreline Landscapes

Säbybergen is next to the Hjälmare Canal and within cycling distance of Arboga. The nature reserve features a varied forest landscape with dramatic landslide slopes, moss-covered rock surfaces, and old oaks and pines. A five-kilometer forest trail leads to viewpoints overlooking the agricultural landscape and the area around the Arbogaån. Rare mosses, lichens, and fungi find a habitat in the forest. Säbybergen thus offers a combination of trails, views, and distinctive natural features.

On the shore of Lake Hjälmaren lies the Gökriksudden deciduous forest reserve, known for its rich spring blooms. Two winding trails lead from the parking lot down to the lakeshore, where visitors can picnic. Old trees, unusual lichens and insects, woodpeckers, and larger mammals such as red deer, moose, and wild boar shape the area’s flora and fauna. Visitors choosing nature destinations by character will find shoreline and deciduous forest here; Kalkugnsberget offers a different experience.

Kalkugnsberget is characterized by calcium-rich pine forest, rare plants, and unusual and endangered fungi. A trail leads to the summit. There is also a birdwatching tower overlooking the wetland and a rest area with a fire pit. The trail toward Gålsjön also ends at a birdwatching tower, which offers views over the wetland. This means visitors can choose between a summit trail and birdwatching.

Old Town and History

Arboga’s well-preserved Old Town is designated an area of national interest. Västerlånggatan is one of the city’s oldest streets. Cobblestones, wooden houses, Ågårdar protected for their cultural history, and historic water channels give the street its distinctive character. Heliga Trefaldighets kyrka also tells the story of Arboga: Franciscan monks originally built the church, which was completed in the early 14th century. Its wall paintings date from the 15th century, and each vault has its own theme.

Arbogabygdens församling offers a Franciskusvandring focused on Francis and creation. At the church, the Franciskuscafé welcomes visitors on Monday mornings for a simple fika, conversation, or a quiet break. As the schedule may change, it is advisable to check it before your visit.

Another glimpse into the city’s history is the Arboga möte of 1435: At the meeting, Engelbrekt Engelbrektsson was elected Lord High Constable; it is considered Sweden’s first parliament. The Arboga Museum is located in the carefully restored Öhrströms gård at Nygatan 37. Its facilities include a large photo archive, an archive, a library, and rooms for temporary exhibitions. The current exhibitions and collections may change; check what is on offer before your visit.

Industrial History and Seasonal Highlights

Jädersbruk was already an important place in the 14th century. In the 1550s, Gustav Vasa established an arms industry there. On Jädersholme stands Verkstaden, the last surviving building directly connected to the blacksmithing work at Jädersbruk. It includes exhibition spaces and rooms for restoring old objects; its use may change. Jädersbruksdagarna takes place every year on the first weekend of September, with machinery demonstrations and a craft market. Arboga Medeltidsdagar also returns every August, with a program that includes jousting, craft markets, music, and talks. Check the specific dates and programs for both events.
