Riverside paths along the Ume River, hiking destinations in the surrounding area and a prominent military heritage give Vännäs many different sides. For your planning, it is worth looking at the differences: one path follows the river, while others lead to viewpoints in the surrounding area; in town, historic buildings and collections tell the story of the region’s history.

On foot along the river and to viewpoints

The waterfront promenade runs for about seven kilometres along the Ume River. It extends largely from Brånsbron in Vännäsby to Marahällabron in Vännäs and is suitable for walking or cycling. This provides a longer riverside path alongside shorter hiking destinations in the surrounding area. The Gullhöjsleden is one kilometre long: from the southern shore of Lake Gullsjön, the trail climbs Gullhöjsen to a viewpoint with a wind shelter. Another tour leads to Selsknösen. This approximately 1.2-kilometre hike is challenging and ends at the 15-metre-high observation tower. In clear weather, the view from there extends for more than five Swedish miles.

The Vännforsleden also offers a different impression of the landscape. In the wider area, it connects the Vännforsen nature reserve with the Långforsen recreation area; hiking is possible along the Vindel River. The hilly, varied river landscape is home to diverse wildlife and plant life. These include beavers, foxes and moose—though sightings are not guaranteed. The trails therefore differ in both length and character: from the waterfront promenade to a short path to a wind shelter, and up to the explicitly challenging tour to Selsknösen. Before a hike, check the current trail conditions.

Military history and architectural heritage

Vännäs Läger is located on a wooded hill northwest of the centre of Vännäs and illustrates a period in the development of Swedish military history. You can walk among historic buildings on the grounds. These include, among others, barracks, a non-commissioned officers’ mess, a medical station, a mortuary and a residence for the administrator. The barracks were occupied in 1900; all the buildings were declared listed buildings in 1985. Vännäs Läger can be reached by bus or train to Vännäs Resecentrum. From there, it is about 1.5 kilometres on foot. Check current connections when planning your visit.

The Vännäs station building is also notable for its architectural history: it is considered a good example of Nordic-influenced architecture by the Swedish State Railways from the 1880s and 1890s, and has been a state-listed building since 1986. The Vännäs Motor Museum offers another way to explore local history. It is housed in an old aircraft hangar at the former airfield, an area shaped by military heritage from the 19th and 20th centuries. The museum presents the history of aviation and engines from the 20th century in period settings; the collection includes, among other things, cars, motorcycles, aircraft, boat engines and tractors. Just outside stands a fully reconstructed Gulf gas station from the 1960s. The exhibition may change.

You can also encounter art in the centre: the pedestrian and cycle-path underpass features works by Jessica Arevärn based on pictures by children from Vännäs. Five specially written audio stories from Storyspot offer another cultural perspective, exploring ghosts and mysterious myths with a historical background from Vännäs.

More activities in the surrounding area

Those who want to combine exercise with leisure activities will find various options. Middagsberget has two lifts and six slopes, including a fun park; there is also a toboggan run and a wind shelter with a barbecue area. Vännäsbadet offers 50- and 25-metre pools, a paddling pool with water features, a water slide and beach volleyball. There are also trampolines and a mini-golf course. The operation of these facilities can change; check the current conditions before your visit.

In the wider area around Vännäs, year-round fishing is possible in the Ume River and the Vindel River, as well as in several lakes. Many fishing areas offer boats and overnight cabins for rent, as well as fishing piers and barbecue huts; some facilities are adapted for accessibility. Since local fishing opportunities and facilities can change, it is worth checking the conditions in advance. This way, you can plan your time in Vännäs around your own interests: strolls by the river, a hike to viewpoints, insights into military history or outdoor activities.
