Sorsele combines its special location on the Vindelälven with railway history, local culture and outdoor activities. These diverse features offer practical ideas for planning a stay.

Sorsele between island and river

Sorsele is partly located on an island in the middle of the Vindelälven. As you approach the town, the church tower of Sorsele can be seen from a great distance. At the municipal level, the view extends further: the Vindelälven flows through the entire municipality of Sorsele and onwards to the coast. The town’s location and the course of the river therefore describe different geographical scales.

Railway history and local culture

The Inlandsbanemuseet is housed in the old freight depot of Sorsele railway station. It is devoted to working life and everyday history; the exhibition also covers the history and construction of the 1,289-kilometre Inlandsbanan. Today’s Sorsele kyrka was built in 1859–1860. Thus, the church’s specific construction dates and the broader story of a long railway line sit side by side in the town.

At the Hembygdsgårdsområde, you can stroll around a small lake, explore historic buildings and their history, and enjoy the view of the Vindelälven. From 1 July, the Åttkantslogen there houses a local heritage museum where visitors can learn about the history of the municipality.

Palt is also part of the region’s everyday culture: in the municipality of Sorsele, it is considered a local specialty and brings villagers together for lunch on Wednesdays.

Trails, river and activities

Hälsans stig is an easy-to-walk circular trail in the centre of Sorsele. A hilly, illuminated running and exercise track offers another way to get active: it is used year-round for exercise and recreation. When there is no snow, it is used for walking and running; in winter, for cross-country skiing. There is also a riverside promenade along the Vindelälven.

Stensundsforsen is a rapid on the Vindelälven, a short walk from the centre. Grayling are fished there. Skibbikken offers another way to enjoy the water: the sandy beach on the Vindelälven has shallow water suitable for swimming. The nature trail Skibbikkleden is easy to walk and leads from Sorsele to Skibbikken. For a wide view over Nedre Gauträsket, the southern part of Storvindeln, head to Skibbikkeudden.

Boat trips are available in Sorsele, and cycling is another possible activity. Ice fishing is popular with local residents. The swimming pool lets families enjoy a swim and has a sauna. As the pool’s opening arrangements may change, check the latest information before visiting.

Plan your season and journey

Sorsele has a railway station with a connection to the Inlandsbanan.
