Robertsfors offers several themes to consider when planning your trip: industrial heritage, trails along the Rickleån, architecture and cultural performances. If you’re looking for a hotel in Robertsfors, you can base your choice on the interests you want to shape your stay. The area’s history and its river landscape offer different perspectives to explore.

Industrial history and the railway

The Robertsfors bruksområde bears traces of industrialisation from 1758 to the present day and is one of Sweden’s areas of national interest for cultural heritage conservation. Its built heritage includes workers’ housing, offices, a manor house and a mechanical workshop. It also features agricultural buildings made of slag stone: a granary, barn, stable and former dairy. The Robertsfors Bruksmuseum shows the development of industrialisation from 1758 to the mid-20th century. The history of the area therefore extends beyond the period covered by the museum.

The Bruksjärnvägen is also part of the industrial history: at the time, it was the world’s northernmost electrified narrow-gauge railway. Its track gauge is 750 millimetres. Today, about 700 metres of track remain, and restored locomotives and carriages can be seen in a restored engine shed. The Barnens Bruk playground is right next to the museum. Katarina Paulsson designed it, inspired by the surroundings and the history of the ironworks. The museum café serves homemade fika pastries and sandwiches; the selection may vary.

Trails along the Rickleån

Flottarstigen and Fiskestigen follow the Rickleån from the village of Överklinten, through the main town of Robertsfors, to the river mouth. Beyond the town, Fiskestigen continues to the Klubben Nature Reserve at the river mouth. Flottarstigen leads to the Robertsfors bruksområde industrial area, connecting a trail with a site of industrial-historical interest. The section of the Rickleån along Fiskestigen was never cleared for log driving and still has its unique surroundings.

For anglers, the managed section of the Rickleån is clearly defined: the fishing area managed by Rickleåns Övre FvO stretches from Bruksforsen in Robertsfors to Åselestupet above Överklinten. Fishing there is possible for salmon, sea trout, grayling, resident trout, pike, perch and roach. These species refer to this section, not the entire river.

The wind shelters also have distinctive features. Åknät “Hexan” has a sleeping platform three metres above the ground, accessed via a net. Åknät “Vittran” offers a spot by the Rickleån for an evening barbecue. You can reach the architecturally designed Johanneslund “Grounded” wind shelter from the car park at Laxbacken via a footpath and a bridge over the Rickleån.

Architecture and culture in town

The Egnahemsområdet Trädgårdsstaden is in the town of Robertsfors. Architect P O Hallman designed the area, which was laid out according to a garden city plan from 1901 and is part of the national interest for cultural heritage conservation. Large plots and outbuildings set far back on the plots define its character. Another public artwork by the river is the Häger sculpture, which has stood at Tvättstugeudden on the Rickleån in Robertsfors since 2011.

The Robertsfors Teater & Musik association presents theatre, music and dance; most performances take place in the theatre hall at Centrumshuset. The Robertsfors musiksällskap was founded in 1969 and stages large musical productions. If you plan to attend a performance, check the dates before your trip. This distinguishes the cultural offerings described on a regular basis from specific event dates.

Robertsfors Golfklubb’s golf course has 18 holes and a par of 72. Robertsfors badhus offers warm-water bathing for different groups, as well as public bathing and swimming for training. As public access arrangements may change, check current bathing and access options before visiting.

Depending on whether you’re more interested in industrial history, river trails, architecture, culture or golf, Robertsfors offers different highlights to choose from. The places and activities mentioned can help you shape your stay around the themes you’d like to explore further.
