Several specific themes can help you plan a stay in Ambjörby: the Fämtleden and Brattåsleden hiking trails, the Fämtfallet waterfall, Nedre Femtå Qvarn mill and Bio Nordvärmland. The trails’ lengths, river crossing and viewpoints help distinguish their different features. The history of Nedre Femtå Qvarn adds its own historical dimension to the hiking and nature themes.

Comparing two hiking trails

The Fämtleden is 8 km long and is a quality-assured hiking trail certified by Hiking Värmland. It runs along both sides of the Fämtan and crosses the river after about 3.5 km via a suspension bridge that is around 100 years old. The starting point and finish are at the upper Fämtbron. There is also a parking area at Fämtfallet, from which the trail markers lead to the start of the route.

The Brattåsleden is 7 km long and leads up Brattåsen, which lies 473 m above sea level. The route offers views of Hovfjället and Branäs; on a clear day, the view extends as far as Trysilfjället in Norway. It is one kilometre shorter than the Fämtleden. While the river crossing and suspension bridge shape the Fämtleden route, the Brattåsleden focuses on elevation and viewpoints.

Fämtfallet and industrial history

The Fämtfallet waterfall lies about 3.5 km north of Ambjörby, along Riksväg 62. The waterfall itself is 44 m high. The total drop is 100 m over a distance of 4.2 km. This second figure describes the longer course, not just the height of the waterfall itself. There is also a slag heap at Fämtfallet, associated with Femtå Bruk. The works operated from 1837 to 1862. These years mark the beginning and end of its operating period; the slag heap provides a tangible link to this period of industrial history.

Mill history and Skrädmjöl

The history of Nedre Femtå Qvarn spans several milestones. Johan “Stret-Johan” Persson originally built the mill in 1924; in 1939, AB Femtå Elektricitetsverk moved it to its current location. The family-run business continues the tradition of roasting and grinding oats and processing them into Skrädmjöl. The flour is deeply rooted in Värmland’s food culture. The Skrädmjöl produced there is made using 100% gluten-free oats, organically grown in Värmland. The product is available locally at Nedre Femtå Qvarn.

Cinema and getting there

Bio Nordvärmland is located in Ambjörby and is Värmland’s northernmost cinema. This adds a cultural venue to the hiking and mill themes. The nearest bus stop to the Fämtleden is in Ambjörby. If you are travelling by bus, check the current timetable before setting off.
